The prospect of John McCain as the likely Republican presidential nominee has produced a squall of anger on the right. Normally reserved columnists and usually ebullient talk-radio hosts vie to express their disgust with McCain, and their disdain for the Republicans who are about to nominate him. The conservative movement as a whole appears disgruntled and dyspeptic.
Now I have nothing against a certain amount of disgruntlement and dyspepsia. The ways of the world, and the decisions of our fellow Americans, occasionally warrant such a reaction.
But American politics tends to be unkind to movements that dwell in anger and relish their unhappiness. In the era from Franklin D. Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy, liberals tended to be happy warriors and that helped their cause. The original civil rights movement succeeded in part because it worked hard to transcend a justifiable bitterness. Liberalism faltered when it became endlessly aggrieved and visibly churlish.

He'll raise our taxes, apparently get rid of any border guards at all (Mexico First), he dissed the Swifties and they earned their right to speak every bit as much as McCain - but we already know he's against freedom of speech. But He can't be QUITE as bad as Hillary.
do you know that bud day was a part of swift boat group? and he is a huge mccain supporter. It wasnt the swifties as much as it was TED SAMPLEY!
Your sign up date says 11-22-2007, dear. And there's really no need to shout all the time, it affects my eyesight.
whose shouting? how can you shout in here? LMAO
I have been hearing that same nauseating spiel for the last 50 years except for the Goldwater and Reagan election years. We conservatives listened to "reason" over and over from folks like you and were scared into voting each time for the lesser of two evils and hoping for a better choice next time.
Well that better choice next time only came twice in fifty years, and now I'm hearing that same old warning loud and clear again this time right here on FR. No more, I'm 70 years old and I'm through waiting for that better next time that never seems to come, and I will not vote for any one of the three remaining GOP candidates in November. So save your warning of the end of the world if conservatives don't fall into line one more time for the younger and more easily intimidated conservatives, cause I aint buying any more of it.
and btw sugar. I corrected my post. I said i signed up when I was in florida. forgot which time tho. I signed up when I was there for thanksgiving. and what is the big deal about that anyways? are u a pi? LOL
Makes sense. Even McCain's media cheerleaders say he doesn't have a chance if he tries appealing to conservatives.
Now I am a campaign operative? LOL change aluminum foil its picking up the wrong frequency. your on mars *L*
That is because McCain is more liberal than Romney. McCain's only chance to win at all is independents and "cross over" Democrats...who aren't really crossing over.
I bet if jesus came back to earth. You would say he is not pure enough to be a conservative *L*
Really? McCain ALSO said he'd never nominate another Justice Alito "because he wears his conservatism on his sleeve". How do we know he even knows what a "strict constructionist" IS?
supreme court should be picked because they are strict constitutionalist ‘s. not because they are liberal or conservative and will rule from the bench based on what thier party is.
Bull. Those remarks were aimed at the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth TV ad in a lame and transparent attempt to protect his buddy Hanoi John Boy. McCain actually shredded documents on POW/MIA sightings on Hanoi John Boy's orders. If one of the Swifties is a McCain supporter, that's his problem and his business. Ted Sampley is the founder of Vietnam Veterans Against John Kerry.
There is no such thing as a liberal who’s any kind of a Constitutionalist, unless it’s in the context of changing it.
and i think Bush did a great job picking roberts. excellent choice !
Oh, my goodness! I clearly did not make those quotation marks clear!
I was quoting the article!
that is true But i do believe judges should be picked because they will go by our constitution
Some pretend like they cant read english. interpret it entirely wrong.!
What a pompous jerk. Think about this, Cristol: Some see your true colors based on this tripe and won't invite you back into their reading room. You've already made FauxNews unwatchable. Take your propaganda and sell it to all those "happy liberal warriors."
Ted Sampley is a nut case. And I love all vets my husband is one. marines nam vet.
