"How exactly do tanks de-ice a roadway?"

The tracks break the ice up. If the ice is to deep to break all the way through, the tracks still rough it up enough to make it easy enough to drive on.

Problem is, that most tanks are also heavy enough to destroy the types of roads they have out there. Guess they'll worry about that later. Or not...
