On Sept. 19, 2000, John McCain rose in the Senate to rail against what he called the "staggering" sums that the federal government planned to spend to help Salt Lake City stage the 2002 Winter Olympics.
"The American taxpayer is being shaken down to the tune of nearly a billion and a half dollars," McCain said.
The Arizona Republican vowed to "do everything in my power" to delay or kill "this pork-barrel spending" and to end the "fiscal abuse" related to the Olympics. "This is preposterous and it must stop," he said.
Mitt Romney, who headed the Olympics, counseled calm when reporters from Utah's Deseret Morning News reached him in Sydney, Australia. Romney challenged McCain's arithmetic, arguing that taxpayers would provide only $250 million. In any case, he asserted that he already had obtained backing in Congress.
"I'm expecting the funding we need to host the Games," he said. "I'm quite confident."
The clash over Olympics spending, which dragged on for two years, helps explain some of the acrimony that now characterizes the race between the two front-runners for the Republican presidential nomination. The dispute provided an early preview of the fissures that still divide McCain and Romney as they face what may be decisive contests Tuesday.
"It may be a source of the sniping between the two," said Quin Monson, assistant director of the Center for Elections and Democracy at Romney's alma mater, Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Kelly Patterson, the center's director, agreed: "People have long memories in politics."

Folks can say whatever they want to say about McCain, and a lot of it is true, but the guy has always been against big spending, with the exception of military spending.
The big spending is medicare and social security. Is he taking those on?
It seems he will try to spend what might be saved on global warming.
How much will he spend on “climate change”?
Mitt said he wasn't interested in investigating the Utah crooks. Just like he wasn't interested in investigating Boston's Big Dig. (Mitt be liking the Bechtel family).
CLICK HERE. Of course Mitt couldn't go out of his way for this guy either.
And, he is against free speech, legal immigration, excessive taxes for the hoax know as global warming....
Sounds like Mitt carried out his job responsibilities. McCain was a lot of talk and no action. I’d vote for either over Hillary or Obama.
OUCH!
Mitt Romney likes challenges, especially those that pad his resume. Willard is all about Willard.
I realize that it’s difficult to say one nice thing on this board about John McCain, but he does have a redeeming quality or two. I won’t hesitate for a moment to vote for him against Hillary. At least he will keep our military strong, while she disdains it. I was a Duncan Hunter guy from day one, but he’s gone now, so I’ll take what I can get. Lesser of two evils etc. It’s the way I’ve had to vote for most of my life. The perfect candidate just isn’t out there, unfortunately. But Hunter was, iyam.
Ummm no
His amnesty bill would have cost tax payers 2.6 TRILLION dollars
Wake up
He is also a global warming kook and wants to put .50 charge on gasoline
Wake up
Romney wants to replace dont ask dont tell by ending all restrictions on homosexuality in our armed forces.
Insurance in Massachusetts is among the most expensive in the nation because of multiple mandates, such as premium price controls and rules dictating that coverage be offered to all comers regardless of health...WSJ 2/2/2008
Romney claims to be a gun rights backer but cannot be a "true Second Amendment" supporter because he supports an assault weapons ban.
My goal is to elect conservatives. Free Republics goal is to elect conservatives. Romney is NO conservative.

At one time or another Romney has betrayed the Constitution, Reaganism, the Contract With America and the Republican Party.
*** Back in 2005, Romney was calling the McCain-Kennedy-Bush comprehensive immigration reform package, which btw included amnesty, “reasonable proposals”. Since that time Romney has unbelievably morphed into a Tancredo clone. Mitt the Phony!
*** In 1994 Romney was trying to run to the left of Fat Ted Kennedy on the abortion issue. He says he had an epiphany a few years back and now calls himself pro-life. Yet he was still upholding a womans right to choose in 2005. Mitt the Fraud!
*** Romney has stated, he would sign a federal assault weapons ban if it came to his desk. Recently, Romney said he was a lifetime hunter and supported the NRA his entire life. We now know that is BS. He joined the NRA in 2006. Mitt the Liar!
*** Romney has a record of advancing homosexual rights, in a leading liberal state that has elected Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, election cycle after election cycle, decade after decade. Mitt Panderer!
*** Also, Romney has a long history of supporting campaign finance reform and restrictions even more stringent than McCain-Feingold legislation. He supported banning Political Action Committees (PACS) and called for a ten percent tax on campaign contributions, along with capping campaign spending on congressional elections. Mitt the Hypocrite!
Romney’s only real accomplishment as Governor of Massachusetts was to propose the first ever statewide health care program in America. Romney wants the federal government to take over 1/7th of the US economy by shoving a version of his RomneyCare down the throats of the American people. Mandates, subsidies and regulations aren’t what the US health care system needs. That is the first step on the road to socialized medicine. Mitt the Social-Liberal!
Romney has a lousy track record on the issues. An unconservative track record. People who have chosen to follow him, are selling out to a cult candidate. Nothing conservative or constitutional about Willard the Myth.
