For the second time in a week, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee made a campaign stop in Alabama, this time visiting Huntsville, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa, where he spoke to a crowd of about 1,000 people at Open Door Baptist Church on Saturday.
We certainly want to be in Alabama as much as possible before Super Tuesday, Huckabee said during a press conference after his speech.
We feel that the people of Alabama would feel more comfortable with a president whos more like them, he said.
Huckabee, who spoke to more than 2,000 people at Samford University the Saturday before, was accompanied by two celebrity guests on his Tuscaloosa visit.
Along the way, one of the tough jobs of being a president is picking the right people for those Cabinet positions, Huckabee said. One of those Cabinet positions that Ive already got filled is secretary of defense.
Im going to make sure that I get somebody who al-Qaida will be scared to death of. Who will make the Taliban quake in their boots, he said. We need somebody who absolutely will bring fear and terror in the hearts of anyone and everyone who wants to bring harm to the United States.
Theres only one man who I think can do that job, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Chuck Norris and his wife, Gena.
Taking the stage amid thunderous applause, Norris, an actor and renowned martial artist, explained why he chose to endorse Huckabee.
Watching the earlier Republican debates, just like the one the other night, [Huckabee] got limited time, Norris said. But the time we heard him, we were impressed. And we said you know, this guy looks like hes standing for something.
Norris said he was even more impressed after reading up on Huckabee on his Web site.
The message he gives is a message of hope, and boy do we need that, Norris said. This country is on a slippery slope right now, and if we dont find a leader who can turn us around, especially for the younger people, were in a lot of trouble.
Thats the reason Gena and I are putting our full support behind Gov. Huckabee, he said. Because he is by far the best candidate and the best president for the United States.
The other celebrity who joined Huckabee on Saturday was Bass Anglers Sportsman Society founder, Ray Scott.
Hes the real deal, Scott said of Huckabee. He tells it like it is. He knows how to communicate. Hes quick on his feet. Hes quick in every respect.
Scott, whos fished with Huckabee, said he chose to endorse Huckabee because he started a fishing program when he was governor of Arkansas to keep kids out of trouble called Hooked on Fishing, not on Drugs.
Pro-life, anti-tax
During his speech, Huckabee touched issues on the various issues that his party is known to stand for, as well as issues of national concern.
If you want a president that believes life is precious from conception to the grave, then your president is me. I am pro-life, said Huckabee, whos an ordained Southern Baptist minister.
Speaking on health care, Huckabee said the United States has a disease system rather than a health care system.
We need to start putting the focus on prevention instead of intervention, Huckabee said. Our system is based on the ideal that well pay for the foot amputation, but not the trip to the podiatrist that would prevent it.
On taxes, Huckabee said the countrys current system is completely illogical.
To illustrate his point, he gave an example of how a man he knew started working a second job to put his daughter through college at Cornell University.
Huckabee said the man ended up barely making any extra money because when he took a second job he was placed in a higher income tax bracket and heavily taxed.
People are more afraid of an IRS audit than they are of getting mugged, Huckabee said. If you get mugged, its over in a few seconds and they get what you have on you. If the IRS comes after you, they get a hold and dont let go for months.
I say lets implement the FairTax and get rid of the IRS on April 15, Huckabee said as he tore a tax form into several pieces.
The main idea of the FairTax is to abolish income taxes in favor of a national tax on consumption.
Immigration
Perhaps Huckabees most controversial platform is his plan on immigration.
Huckabee announced during his speech that hes agreed to support the immigration plan of U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., which calls for the construction of a fence along the Mexican border and fingerprint-encoded identification cards for all foreigners authorized to work in the U.S.
My immigration plan is tough, but its fair, Huckabee said. Its not that we dont want people to find a home here; we do. Just the right way and the legal way.
Huckabee said the government failed when the Sept. 11 hijackers were legally allowed in the United States and werent monitored.
Folks, if FedEx and UPS can keep up with a package when its 10 feet or 50 feet from your door, and our government cant keep up with people who they let in the front door, then we need to outsource the job to FedEx and UPS, he said.
Values voters
C.J. McKee, 60, of Tuscaloosa, said he thinks Huckabees ideas and stands on the issues are right on target.
The unfortunate thing is, because Huckabees not John McCain or Hillary Clinton, hes not getting any time, McKee said. America needs to hear what he has to say.
Steve Mitchell, 46, of Tuscaloosa said that Huckabees speech was impressive and he may just vote for him.
He has a lot of good family and Christian values, which are important to me, Mitchell said. Im still open, but hes my frontrunner right now, because what hes saying is in line with my thinking.
Though Huckabee has only won one contest, the Iowa caucus, so far, he said he wont drop out of the race prematurely.
Im in this thing for the long haul, Huckabee said during an interview after the event. The national media shouldnt say here are the candidates, the candidates are who they are.
If this were a boxing match, I would have to be knocked out cold and dragged out of the ring, he said.

Senator McCain and Governor Romney:

As a Mississippi born and raised Southern Baptist I can safely say that Huck is NOT my guy.
He’s way to liberal for me.
I don’t like redistribution of wealth.
The Evangelicals strike again. Too bad they haven’t figured out in the deep south that the Huckster is an Evangelical of the Rick Warren type, not the old time southern Baptist type. But, still, like lemmings heading toward the sea, they will vote for Huckleberry.
note that the Forbes flat tax also had a big standard deduction not mentioned, so not only was Romney a class warrior, he’s also shamefully deceptive.
Romney is still against overhauling the tax code, calling the flat tax unfair

so here’s one instance where he hasn’t flip flopped!
“Real faith makes us humble and mindful, not of the faults of others, but of our own. It makes us less judgmental, as we see others with the same frailties we have. Faith gives us strength in the face of injustice and motivates us to do our best for ‘the least of us.’ Our nation was birthed in a spirit of faith - not a prescriptive one telling us whether to believe, but one acknowledging that a Providence pervades our world.”
—Governor Mike Huckabee
We’ll see if you are correct...
I highly doubt it.
We’re not stupid.
And, we aren’t bigoted as you seem to be.
“Were not stupid.
And, we arent bigoted as you seem to be.”
If you vote for Huckabee now, knowing that McCain will end up being the Pub candidate if you do, rather than voting for Romney who at least has a snowball’s chance in h*ll, then you are either bigoted against Mormons or politically naive, or both (or stupid, if the shoe fits).
What do you have against evangelicals?
WHY do you think we like Rick Warren?
Frankly, I don’t like him at all, and think he’s a cult leader.
So, don’t lump Southern Baptists in with him.
I’m Jewish, not Christian at all, and support Huckabee. I am so glad to see such strong leadership on moral values. I remember when Reagan was running for re-election. I was a lot younger so I didn’t care about the taxes or the cold war. But it was Reagan’s clear leadership on pro-life that won me over. How can anyone be for abortion? How can anyone not be a Republican?
My brother was previously a Rudy fan. After all, Rudy was very good to the Jews. But after the last debate he became very interested in Huckabee as well.
“The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs the affairs of man [Romans 8:28]. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice [Matthew 10:29], is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it [Psalms 127:1]. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel [Genesis 11:1-9].”
—Benjamin Franklin, arguing the need for prayer at the Constitutional Convention
He is no real threat to a liberal running for the nomination in either party because he stands no chance of being elected president.
But he has an impact in the primaries because he draws conservative votes away from other conservatives/non-liberal republican candidates, splitting the conservative vote and keeping other, stronger conservative candidates from beating McCain.
Is the Huckster being covertly funded or enabled by the Clintons or their Arkansas connections to break up the conservative vote and give them a weak, opponent like McCain to run against?
They know that dedicated conservatives will not give McCain much support in the general election and they have the connections in their (and Huck’s) home state to make it happen - even without Huck’s knowledge or active participation.
is there even one good reason why anyone should support Romney? I’m still waiting...
And all those people he talked to are just going to feel their best come November.
what stronger conservative are you talking about? Ron Paul? a hope Fred will come back into the race?
Huckabee is going to try to broker a V. P. slot with McCain at the Republican convention!
Good Lord!
You read more into my post than you should have.
I’m a FredHead!
And will remain so to the end.
WHY would I vote for a man who wants to redistribute our wealth, as the Huckster wants to do?
As for the rest of your accusations, I’ll forget the fact that you accused me of crimes I didn’t commit.
best one I can come up with is that he is not McCain.
