Mitt Romney breaks off for Mormon funeral
Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | Sunday, Feb. 03, 2008 | By Tim Shipman

Mitt Romney has taken a detour from the frenetic campaign trail to attend the funeral in Salt Lake City of the Mormon leader, Gordon Hinckley, the president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, who died last week, aged 97.

For the Mormon candidate, it was a diversion he could ill afford as he seeks to win enough presidential delegates on "Super Tuesday" this week to keep him in the race for the White House.

Republican strategists said the funeral puts Mr Romney's Mormonism back on the political agenda - an issue he has largely managed to sideline in recent weeks as the focus has fallen on economic issues, where the multi-millionaire businessman thrives.

He now trails John McCain by more than 20 points in national polls. Jim Nuzzo, a former White House aide from Mr Romney's home state of Massachusetts, said: "There are two things that don't work out for Romney going to this funeral. One is reminding people that he is a Mormon. They're going to recognise that it's different from mainstream Christianity.

"The second is that when people are wondering whether your campaign is on life support, the last thing you want to do is be pictured at a funeral."

Mr Romney was already virtually guaranteed to win Utah on Tuesday, a state that gives relatively little return in the form of delegates required to win the nomination. The funeral interrupted a hectic cross-country battle for Republican votes, which translate into the delegates who will formally decide who will be the Republican candidate for the White House.

Up for grabs are nearly half of all delegates necessary to be crowned the victor at party nomination conventions in the autumn. Mr Romney squeezed in an event in Minnesota before the funeral, while Mr McCain began a trail through the South, while planning an audacious raid today on Mr Romney's home turf of Massachusetts.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton concentrated her efforts in the West yesterday before a sweep of eastern states today and tomorrow. Barack Obama was planning visits to eight states in the final 72 hours before voting.

Mr Romney has invested nearly $3 million (£1.5 million) more of his personal cash on advertising in the run-up to Tuesday's votes. Mr McCain has bought nationwide advertising on cable television. Mr Obama is on the air in 20 states and Mrs Clinton in 12.

McCain aides appeared reluctant to make political capital out of the funeral. One said: "Everyone has that in life, where unfortunately we've got to go to a funeral. We've all been there. He knew the man and obviously had a high regard for him."

But the McCain team believes that their rival should quit his self-funded campaign.

Mr Romney says he will reassess his prospects on Wednesday.

I don’t believe the scriptures cited are corrupted. I do respect that you don’t share the same opinion as those expressed however. Thanks for the reasonable response.

If the Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers (as well are in that systm), it would be wise not to criticize Huckabee for saying that’s what Mormons believe. Just let it go.

If the Mormons criticized the Methodists for baptizing children, I would not deny it happens.

Jesus said “If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father”.

The Father did not create Jesus or the Holy Spirit. They are all One.

First, did you ever notice that on Huckabee news you don’t see Mormons “pouncing” on Huckabee’s religion and attacking it?

Mormons criticing the theology of others would be very difficult. Mormons really don't know the beliefs of others. And they sure aren't going to attend another church to find out. I am welcome to attend a Mormon church whenever I like but a Mormon is not going to attend our worship service just to see what it is like.

What difference does it make what church you attend if we are all Christians?

There were a few of them, holding some of the most vile signs imaginable. But, if something can be revolting and funny at the same time, this was it. Here they are, protesting us “cult members” because we aren’t “Christian,” and they are. They think they have some kind of “Christian ministry.” Yet they are completely vile and hateful to fellow human beings who are just minding their own business, grieving one of their own. And they are too stupid to recognize the irony.

AppyPappy you know one can say things in many ways.

Some can say things to poison the waters.

Some can say things to open ones mind to a position they never really thought about it in those terms.

How many times have you read the scriptures and gotten one point of view and another later on read those same verses and the Lord show you more insight than you had before.

What Huckabee did was to sensationalized to play on ones emotions Huck was trying to be a trouble maker with the words of God, so Huck could get personal gain.

Many think it is cute to accuse the LDS Lying for the Lord when it is the Lord who taught us “Milk before Meat” to do other wise is to poison the water.

1 Cor. 3
1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

Heb. 5:
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

D&C 19:
21 And I command you that you preach naught but repentance, and show not these things unto the world until it is wisdom in me.

22 For they cannot bear meat now, but milk they must receive; wherefore, they must not know these things, lest they perish.

23 Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.

24 I am Jesus Christ; I came by the will of the Father, and I do his will.

The Westboro Baptists were there, on the corner of State and North Temple. Did the TV stations show them?

Unreal and sad that people can be so deceived.

Wow, GREAT WHITEWASH of Mitt! Best I’ve seen here this week.

however, there are a few things I’d like to reflect back to you...

>>I have nothing but admiration for this man, an honorable and decent man, the one man in this race on the Pub side with the cleanest slate and no scandal either of his own or of any one of his family members. Squeaky clean comes to mind.

I find him honorable in many ways, and respect that he has
one wife and a seemingly nice family. That doesn’t make Mitt
into Saint Mitt. He has problems with truthfulness and it makes
one wonder why he has a need to stretch the truth.

His comments about being a lifetime hunter are a good example
of Mitt’s exaggerations. His “seeing” his dad march with
MLK are another. His tortured explanation of “seeing” after
the truth came out is another example.

Your own post, which I am responding to, is a good example
of exaggeration of the truth to make Mitt into more than he
is. It strikes me as peculiar that you or Mitt would think
you had to exaggerate, if he was as good as you think.

He is not “squeaky clean”.

>>John McCain is an adulterer who dumped his first wife
injured in an accident and crippled, to take on a young
blond heiress to a fortune.

Unless you’ve been shadowing McCain, I doubt you can honestly
say he is committing adultry. That is the definition of an
adulterer, as surely you know.

Did he have sex with his new wife while he was still married
to his old wife. Shoot if I know. I assume so. It wasn’t good.

Do you honestly claim to know Mitt has never committed
adultery? If so, how could you possibly know? Think carefully
because Jesus had a few words to say about what it means
to commit adultery. “... if you even look upon a woman with
lust in your heart...”

When he was separated from his first wife, he met and later
married his current wife, who has been his wife for a long,
long time. Was it the most honorable way to deal with his
first marriage? No. It is, however, as common as asphalt in
our country. To my knowledge, based entirely on never seeing
a story that says he is cheating on his wife, he is not
an adulterer.

From your post, it appears you also have something against
blondes. I’m married to a blonde and God made them too. Lighten
up.

>>He plans on being in MA, Romney’s home state on the night of the returns from Super Tuesday. For one reason only, if he wins, to rub it in. That is rotten and unnecessary and yet he does it.

So, you are arguing it is immoral to campaign in the state
of a former Governor? I think not. My understanding is that
McCain is on the ballot and has a right to campaign there.

If he does win there (which I doubt), it will certainly send
the message that Republicans in MA are not Romney fans. Politics
is a blood sport. That is the way it has always been.

>>That’s why McCain would consistently go against Bush’s war policies, and his legislative slate.

No. I see no evidence. McCain was a huge advocate of Bush’s surge strategy.

>>You think he is going to do one thing about abortion issues? He will ignore them.

There is only 1 thing any POTUS does about abortion - appoint
Supreme Court Justices who stick with the Constitution. If there
were anything else, it would be illegal today after Reagan
and two Bushes.

Mitt’s record on judge appointments and his process he ordered
in MA turned out to be a failure. Any claim that he would
be better than McCain is based entirely on hopes.

>>Romney is an honorable man<<

Looking the other way as his right hand man impersonated
a policeman - a crime, btw.

Lying about his record and wild claims about hunting and
his father.

Looked the other way as porn drove the profits
of Marriot - and as 10% of every paycheck he cashed as a
board member was funded by porn.

Advocating for gay rights - and claiming he would do more
for advancing gay rights than Sen. Kennedy.

Advocating and signing into law a bill that would become
his legacy -> $50 abortions in MA for everyone

Changing almost every conviction he held and used to get
elected in MA in his mid to late 50s????

Those are all character issues, & well documented

Mitt is certainly, again, from what can be seen in photo
shoots, a good husband and father. That doesn’t make him
completely truthful or honest or honorable.

Ok, you win. Vote for Huckabee, and then McCain. I’ll talk to you again about 2 years into McCain’s regime and then we’ll see what you have to say. I won’t vote for our own Party’s demise. Unless, of course, you are even more lucky and get Hitlery or Obama for your Prez. Too bad you have to take me down with you.

flaglady,
I don’t think any of the three, or any combination of
two of the three can beat the Dems this go around...
so all the effort and disagreement here on FR may
not matter in the end.

For me there are two overriding issues in this election
and I am making my decision based entirely on those two
issues:

1. Prosecution of the war on terror
2. Supreme Court Justices

Everything else is gravy.

We may disagree, but Mitt is certainly better than
any Democrat choice. I just think your original post
made him walk on water... and in reality, no one
does.

best,
ampu
