How conservative can achieve a brokered convention
me | February 2, 2007

Like many on Free Republic, I am disturbed by the outcome of the Republican primaries for President this year. None of the Republican candidates still in the running gives us anything to be excited about. Indeed, most of those who do support one or the other does so grudgingly. Speaking for myself, I'll vote for the Republican nominee whoever he is just to prevent another Clinton White House.

However, we can do much better than what's in the currente field, and we should. There is only one way this can be achieved- a brokered convention. And it can be achieved.

I've chatted with a couple of Freepers, and from the information they've given me, I've learned how this can be done.

Vote for the second place candidate in your state even if you dislike him. For example, if Huckabee is running second to McCain in your state, vote for Huckabee. If Romney is running second to McCain in your state, vote for him. However, if Romney or Huckabee becomes the front-runner, than vote for whoever is the second-place candidate in your state, even if it's McCain. Or if Ron Paul is running strongly in your state, vote for him. Whenever one of these candidates becomes the front-runner, oppose him, regardless of who he is.

The point of this is to deny any of the candidates a majority of the ballots at the Republican National Convention. This will make it clear to the delegates and the convention managers that the conservative grass roots is not satisfied with any of the candidates who is running and wants someone who is acceptable to them. The nominee doesn't have to be ideal, but he or she has to be acceptable.

We can still influence the process. It will just take some thinking outside the box and creative approaches.

So, vote for the second-place Republican candidate in your state, even if you detest him. It's not about nominating any of these, but getting someone else in.

Thanks to the Freepers I've chatted with for giving me this idea.

Regards,

CF

I think Democrats will be busy voting in their own primary and will avoid drifting over to the Republican Primary to cause havoc, being the close race it is on the Democrat side.

Unfortunately, I will be voting for no one in the primaries.

Ironically enough, because I would never register myself as a member of the Republican Party. The reason for this is because of the likes of Lindsey Graham, John Voinevich and, curiously enough,... John McCain.

"None of the Republican candidates still in the running gives us anything to be excited about."

That's an interesting if bizarre analysis. I can't see any real conservative voting for McInsane - you saw how few actual Republicans voted for him in Florida, right? - but it is conceivable that true conservative voters could be fooled by the Huckster's faux-conservative, Huey P. Long-style populism, thus takinig votes from the only candidate who even pretends to conservative thinking, Mitt (WTF does "Mitt" stand for, anyway?) Romney.

Huckleberry is clearly campaigning for VP, and a vote for him is a vote for the "McLame/Huckster" ticket.

Huckabee is wasting his time , if he is campaigning for VP, because Rudy thinks he has that sewn up with McCain.

I agree. However the Republican and the Independents (not leaning Dem) will opt for the Republican ballot in Texas. Using this plan in Texas, if the poll's accurate, not only sucks but its fool hardy.

Romney needs to come out swinging on Monday with the facts on John McCain and his record and his votes in Congress being opposite of his words today. As Jack Webb use to say "Just the facts, Mame." We Romney needs to speak them loud and clear more than he being caught on the offensive fighting off McCain's 'dirty tricks and twisting of his comments'.

Believe me McCain will use every trick in the book. He believes his is the "Chosen One", just as Hillary believes she is.

Mr. Mitt to you, stands for intergrity, conservatism, and for Family values, that are second to none. He is the only Candidate that even when he was ahead in delegate count , was treated like he was losing by the media..

All Mitt has to do to take out McCain is keep him from his afternoon naps, because I don’t think McCain is going to last to super Tuesday.

Hip boots time? Reminds me of the Clinton years, when it was all piled higher and deeper than we ever thought possible.

How on earth did the Republican party end up with a front-runner who.....

1. Wanted to be John F’n Kerry’s running mate??....
2. Was a corrupt member of the “Keating Five”?....
3. Has been duped by the Euro-socialist “global warming” alarmists?....
4. Wants to roll out the red carpet for the illegal alien hordes?....
5. Was one of two senators (along with the ignoble Lincoln Chafee) who joined the Democrats in voting against the Bush tax cuts?....
6. Proudly put his name to the most dangerous assault on free speech (”McCain-Feingold”) in the nation’s history?....
7. Is older than Bob Dole was when Dole ran for President in 1996, and who would be the oldest man in history to try to win the Presidency as a major party candidate?

Somebody wake me up in 2012 if America is still around.

That's really stupid!

Vote for your choice, and if your choice is someone other than Romney and you don't want MCain, then vote Romney.

I agree, but how does the brokered convention work? How would say Fred Thompson be able to get the nomination in a brokered convention? Or would the nomination go to either McCain, Huckabee, Romney, or Paul since they are still in the race?

Huckabee, I think is doing a real disservice by staying in the election because he is just to going to split the conservative vote and make it easier for McCain to get the nomination.

You’re probably right about Huckabee, I don’t want he or McCain on the ticket. But I don’t want Mitt Romney on the ticket, either.

the very real chance one candidate could go from tail-end-Charlie to fait accompli in a single day.

And even THAT isn't a fait accompli if a landslide grassroots effort were to write in a plurality for one solid candidate.

I won’t vote for Hillary for certain. OR McCain.

I won’t vote for Hillary for 2 reasons: She’s a Clinton, and she’s a woman. No offense but I just don’t think there is ANY woman around that can hack this job. To be fair, I don’t think most men can hack the job either. And I think if a woman was honest, in her heart of hearts, they wouldn’t WANT the job. If you take the job seriously (not like Fratboy Billy) the pressures are incredible, nothing truly prepares you for it. Even the well prepared and experienced and fit are aged greatly by it. I don’t think I’ve met a woman with a personality/psyche that could deal with this. I don’t think very many men have a personality/psyche that could deal with this.

What if Hillary chooses Bill Clinton as her VP?

He could step in for her whenever she wanted a ‘spa day’.

That would be something, but I don’t think he can because on the line of succession - he can’t be President again.

That strategy worked well for Obama in New Hampshire. Stop McCain!

Great idea.....for those who can’t admit there are NO conservative candidates (based on their track records, no matter what the MittWitts say), let them follow the path to a loss of conservatism.....again....
