Bush Proposes Giving D.C. $32 Million More To Boost School Reform
The Washington Post ^ | 2-2-08 | David Nakamura

The White House plans to announce Monday that it has proposed giving the District $32 million in additional federal funding this year for public education, including a special $20 million payment aimed at helping Mayor Adrian M. Fenty restructure public schools, federal officials said. ......

The District schools have not had an incentive-pay program, Rhee said, but she is in the process of developing one, in conjunction with the Washington Teachers' Union. She declined to talk about specifics but said support from the White House shows that federal officials think she is serious about improving performance.

"When I say performance pay, I will not water it down and create ridiculous incentives that don't move student achievement," Rhee said. "I do not think it's normal for the federal government to give this amount to a school district, but my track record of doing different things made them believe I could do this."

Can Rhee and Fenty rescue DC public schools? Or will DC be the first system to become private?

Public Education Ping

This list is for articles relating to public education.

Gabz, Amelia, and I have volunteered to take over the list so that Metmom can concentrate on home schooling issues.

If you want on or off this ping list, please Freepmail SoftballMominVA who is this month’s official keeper of the list

Won’t work.

DC schools suck because...dramatic pause...

MOST OF THE KIDS THAT GO THERE ARE HOPELESS THUGS THAT DON’T GIVE A SH*T.

There, I said it. I don’t care how much money you pump in there, those kids don’t WANT to learn, and won’t. It’s not their fault, either, their PARENTS didn’t instill the values into them to want to learn.

If I am not mistaken Wash DC has the highest “per student” expenditure of any school system in the US.
What is the return on the investment (where do they rank in standard test scores)
And how will spending more money improve the results?

In all due respect, if it is a pay for results program, it is a step in the right direction. Now as to the thug theory, it’s a sad fact that all the white kids are in exclusive private schools, imho. There is no starker expample of a cultural divide than DC.

You are right, they do. And it is largely to the expense on special education and the incompetence of that staff. There was another article in the Wash Times that showed the school failed to check for residency requirements in about 150 or so SpEd students and the cost was over 3 million dollars for those kids alone.

If, and that's a big IF, Rhee is going to be successful, she must get rid of the incompetence and the deadwood in the back offices.

You are correct, but I’d like to make one correction. You say ‘parents’ as if there are TWO adults in the home. The illegitimate rate in DC is a staggering 80% or higher. There are no men in the homes, which may be part of the problems you highlighted.

That’s why it’s such a joke when people talk about good school districts. The students and parents in the district make the schools look good, not the other way around. Most kids learn in spite of the schools, not because of them.

If I remember correctly, lowest test scores in the country. Money down a rat hole from the “compassionate conservative” - again.

More money for failing D.C. schools! Bush’s next brainwave will be to ask Israel to give up land for peace.

Yea, just through more money at the problem! Only people that will benefit are the administrators and teachers.

Ah, the DC teachers’ union! Such a trustworthy organization...

They already spend more per pupil than any state, but the kiddies’ scores keep going down. How come? It’s not more money they need, it’s new teachers with better training, toss out the incompetent teachers and lock out the pure scum among the students. Then set and enforce new standards of performance for both teachers and students. Sounds great, but politics and racism will intervene and all RATs will refuse any such ideas.

Idiot Bush giving more millions to the organized crime entity known as the democrat party's DC Teachers Union?

There would be more value to the students by burning the money. At least the classrooms would be warm.

Dang! My wife is on the phone and I KNOW GWB called to get my help on this and all he got was a busy signal!!!

1) Abolish the Dept of Education
2) No federal funds to any school district with a Teachers Union.

Ronald Reagan must have gotten the same busy signal when he called. I am so disappointed, and I suspect many other taxpayers are too.

But what about “No Child Left Behind”. I still like to quote Judge Smails from “Caddyshack” to my kids when discussing such issues - “The world needs ditchdiggers, too.”
