Tallahassee, FL (LifeNews.com) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain has taken a pro-life position on abortion, but his views on embryonic stem cell research are a cause for concern among many pro-life advocates. The Arizona senator defended his position in support of the destructive research at a Florida campaign stop.
McCain said he continues to support forcing taxpayers to fund the research, which involves the destruction of human life and has never helped patients, but called his support for it a very agonizing and tough decision."
All I can say to you is that I went back and forth, back and forth on it and I came in on one of the toughest decisions Ive ever had, in favor of that research," he said, according to a Catholic News Agency report.
"And one reason being very frankly is those embryos will be either discarded or kept in permanent frozen status," he explained.
I understand how divisive this is among the pro-life community," McCain added.
According to CNA, he explained how he hopes that the science will advance to the point that embryonic stem cell research is unnecessary.
Pro-life advocates believe that day has already come.
As LifeNews.com reported Japanese and Wisconsin teams released studies in the medical journals Science and Cell that show how they were able to make adult stem cells revert to an embryonic-like form.
The studies confirm that human skin cells (fibroblasts) can be used to make pluripotent stem cells sharing essentially all the features of human embryonic stem cells without the moral quagmire.
CNA says McCain spoke to that new research, which pro-life groups have said is ethical.
I believe that skin stem cell research has every potential very soon of making that discussion academic
. Sam Brownback and others are very encouraged at this latest advance," he said.
We need this POS like we need a toothache.
He’s the kind of guy who “agonizes” over decisions but then comes down on the side that hurts someone else if it might help him.
No doubt he “agonized” too when he dumped his loyal first wife to marry Cindy’s money and buy a career for himself.
McCain is NOT in any way pro-life and this proves it. He will say or do anything — ANYTHING — to be President because he thinks we owe it to him for his time at the Hanoi Hilton.
In fact, I think what got that egotist through that time was the thought that one day he could ride this to the Presidency.
McCain cres about McCain, nothing else.
This cinches it. No votes for Juan.
Willard was passing legislation that allowed women to get $50 abortions in Massachusetts, forcing Catholic adoption agencies out of business with special rights laws for homosexuals and forcing Catholic hospitals to distribute contraceptives.
He even went so far as to lie about his own mother's position on abortion to impress pro-aborts.
So, don't give pro-lifers this nonsense that Romney is a better choice.
Both of them suck. |
how stupid can he be!
With the recent advances there is no need for him to publicly take a losing position like this.
That’s it...I’m not voting for either of these guys.
They are wishing for a cure that will enable them to live forever.
They are doomed to disappointment.
My respect for Sam Brownback has just gone up 1000%. Senator Brownback, ride McCain hard..get the commitment...God’s Speed
Regardless of what one thinks of stem-cell research..I can’t believe this so-called Republican is actually supporting the taxpayers funding it. That is the real issue.
If life begins at conception, what’s the difference between his two positions on abortion v. destroying embryos?
Josef Mengele would blush at the possibility of embryonic stem cell research. He too had a thing for experimenting on unwilling, defenseless subjects. I’m not surprised to find McCain supporting such an abomination.
He keeps adding to Ann Coulters list?
He’s giving all of us the finger.
Doesn’t this idiot have the capacity to understand the scientific evidence that Embryonic Stem Cell Research HAS NO POSITIVE MEDICAL POTENTIAL?
You got it. It's clear McCain has decided he doesn't need conservatives because he can count on hispanics and independants to take up the slack. So he's telling us to all buzz off, he'll be as liberal as he want's and we can't do a thing about it.
Proving that he’s not only politically volatile, but scientifically stupid, as well.
Oh wait. He must be romancing pharco money for the homestretch.
Man, I’m beginning to develop a personal understanding of Bush Derangement Syndrome.
It's Time for "Duncan Hunter, - Take Two!" "It's DUNCAN Time!"

We need concepts which are grounded in reality rather than wishful thinking.
