Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow, predicts more winter ahead

If you believe in folklore, bundle up for six more weeks of wintry weather.

This is Groundhog Day, and the furry little critter known as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning. That, according to tradition, means six more weeks of winter.

The apathetic-looking rodent was pulled from his stump by members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle. They are the local businessmen in the Western Pennsylvania town who carry out the February 2nd ritual while garbed in top hats and tuxedos.

The ceremony was preceded by a boisterous celebration attended by thousands of cold, but happy people, including a few couples who used the occasion to get engaged.

Sorry, Phil. Global warming is throwing off your predictions. It’s going to be near 80 this weekend here.

My first grader learned about this at school and was anxious to get up early this morning to find out what happened to Phil—so she woke me up around 5 am!!! Yikes. My one day to sleep in a little bit. Oh, well. ;-)

For the 28th Annual Celebration, eighteen-year-old Beau was awakened by the repeated ringing of an antique farm bell.

I wonder if that works on 14 year olds as well... :)

If you don’t have access to Phil, you can look at the calendar and see that there are six more weeks of Winter.

My thinking too - sorta.
One the best shots I ever made was a (paced off) 425 yards on a Kentucky chuck. Savage 112J in .243 Winchester. Darn, I wish I had kept that rifle - it had really superior accuracy.

Semper Fi,

When are we going to discover a groundhog-location to predict something useful, like elections or the level of the stock market? Or maybe even the Superbowl. A pox on Phil’s dirty little home.

BTW, the ideas above are available for execution. All a feller needs is some stiffs in top hats and such, a few video cameras and a bit of PR. Your neighborhood groundhog may be golden.
