Huckabee: This is not a two-man GOP race
CBS News ^ | February 1, 2008 | Joy Lin

Posted on 02/01/2008 5:40:31 PM PST by Kurt Evans

Conservative, conservative, conservative. That was the word Mike Huckabee used again and again with reporters to emphasize his credibility as a contender for the Republican nomination...

“There has been somewhat of - almost a national media spin that this race is a two-man race,” said Huckabee... “Last night, the CNN debate was very frustrating for me. There seemed to be an unequal level of time that was allocated, and if people look at the delegate count, one has to have 1,191 delegates in order to be the nominee. So far, no one has even broken a hundred; there’s only 8% of the delegates that have yet been tabulated ..."

Continuing, Huckabee questioned Romney’s quest to claim the conservative mantle: “If people are looking for a true conservative, somebody who hasn’t had a recent change of opinion to become one, I would be the logical choice ..."

Although he would have “loved” to have Arnold Schwarzenegger’s endorsement, Huckabee seemed to undermine it by challenging the California governor’s conservative credentials, and implicitly, McCain’s.

“I would never have expected the governor of California to endorse me and, frankly, I’m probably a lot more conservative on a lot more issues than he would have been comfortable with – whether it’s the Second Amendment, or pro-life issue, or marriage amendment issue or any number of things.”

Huckabee later said that receiving former Republican candidate Duncan Hunter’s endorsement last week probably meant more in the conservative hotbed of San Diego than Schwarzenegger’s endorsement of McCain.

Rep. Duncan Hunter's endorsement of Huckabee is helping to bring the defense and border conservatives on board:
"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter... "Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity."

Of course it’s not a two man race, it’s just that two of the three are working together.

Senator McCain and Governor Romney:
A wolf and a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

As I’ve said before, if Rush wants to stop Senator McCain,
he ought to get behind a real conservative instead of a fake one:

Thursday on Morning Joe, Governor Huckabee discussed the idea that conservatives are rallying around Governor Romney:
Here’s the man who didn’t hit political puberty in the conservative ranks until 60 years old... Here’s a guy who just 10 years ago was saying, "Look, I’m an independent; I’m not for that Reagan-Bush legacy." And now he wraps himself in it. Here’s a guy who--despite what he says--his record in Massachusetts was significant increases in fees. And the numbers, you know, I’ll go to the independent, objective reports of those, and they were more like $700 million.

He is a recent convert to pro-life. He still doesn’t have a solid record on the Second Amendment. He still believes in Brady and banning "assault weapons"--as they're sometimes called--which is not a conservative position. He’s a recent convert to this "traditional marriage" view. He at one time said he'd do more for the gay agenda than Ted Kennedy. That’s not a conservative position.

So I just don’t understand this whole thing of so many people, whether it’s Rush Limbaugh or anyone else, saying he’s the conservative in the race. He may be saying conservative things now, but he certainly wasn’t saying them until he ran for president, and his record is not one of being consistent. When you have an abortion bill in your state as part of your health package, that for $50 you guarantee a government-funded abortion within your health plan ... To any person who’s truly pro-life, that is not conservative...

It’s about the credibility of the candidacy and whether or not there’s authenticity. And for me, give me a guy that I disagree with but at least I know he’s speaking from his convictions, and it’s not just a convenient political view that he’s taking because, "Today I’m talking to a women’s group, so I’m pro woman, but tomorrow I’m talking to a men’s group, so I’m not." That’s what disturbs me, and I think it’s the kind of politics that just really turns people off.

I am sick and tired of phony liberals like McCain and Huckabee who lie about their records and pretend to be conservatives just before the election. As soon as the primaries are over McCain and Huckabee will go back to their true positions of advocating tax increases and massive government subsidy programs for illegal aliens.

McCain plus Huckabee are against Mitt Romney.
That two against one because neither one of these petty little men could beat ROmney by himself.

It looks like it may have been a mistake for Romney to run all those anti-Huckabee ads in Iowa.

Well, you live and learn.

I fear this might be true. How do you pick the least of the three evils?

Thanks Huck for guaranteeing that is it NOT a two man race - and that McVain ends up gutting the GOP.

I’ll remember this in the future. And when Haley Barbour is my candidate in 2012 I will not be acknowledging your existence so don’t bother to run.

Indeed. They all are. But I guess it's human nature to rally around the least objectionable one and then conveniently ignore/forget his record. Many of the same folks who are currently praising Mitt as a "Reagan conservative" were blasting the heck out of him when Fred was still in the race.
