“From time to time we’ve been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else?” —Ronald Reagan

Government programs feed off the self sustaining individuals and in the end weakens the pool of its own involuntary supporters till it fails. Governments do not really collapse but change to a form that was undesirable in the first place.

"DUH

Dr Wilkes IS NRTL"

Actually its Willke, not Wilkes- and the correct abbreviation is NRLC not NTRL. I know you haven't been here too long, but I see from your posting history you get into it with lots of freepers. Is it intentional? By the way-Thanks for my new tagline!

For me, I would rather have a nominee who lied to the democrats and then governed as a conservative, then a nominee who lied to the republicans and will lead as a liberal!

Or you pick the candidate who didn't flip on that issue at all to be the most trustworthy on that issue -- Huckabee.

They are all flippers and pandering to the conservatives, so pick your poison!

Me, I am a social conservative first. The most important issues to me are the Second Amendment, Right to Life, protecting the family and traditional marriage. I NEED conservative justices and judges, it is even more important to me than securing our border and lower taxes. So I choose the guy who has never flipped on those issues -- Huckabee.

Another conservative might think small government is the most important issue, so he will choose Romney because he hasn't flipped on that where he has flipped on abortion and guns. Another conservative might think the war is most important so she chooses McCain because that is the issue he hasn't flipped on.

We have no uniter right now. We are fractured as a movement.

What state elected Jesse Jackson as Governor? What government did he run for twelve years? When did Jesse Jackson become a FReeper?

Oh, you are only comparing that they are both ministers. Nothing else matters.

Never mind.

You know what, I sure haven’t seen it to the same degree. Perhaps I just don’t know who the people are that are being critical.

We talked about the problems with each guy. That needed to be said.

It is always possible Huckabee will flip to McCain. If so we’re not worse off than we are today, with McCain looking like he’s headed to take it all anyway.

If we get lucky, we get lucky. If we don’t, we’re back to ground zero.

This is humorous, the way they slammed Mitt.

“”National Right to Life is grateful for the strong pro-life record established by Mike Huckabee as governor of Arkansas, and recognizes that Governor Huckabee has taken the strongest pro-life position on all of the life issues of any of the remaining candidates for president.”

“National Right to Life also appreciates the pro-life position taken in this presidential campaign by former governor Mitt Romney.”

And couldn't voting for Romney instead of Huckabee also be considered to be a vote for McCain?

No, because Romney is in a good position to actually win. Huck is a daydream.

Romney is a big government Republican who will usher in universal healthcare, government funded abortion, gay marriage and corporate welfare. The country will be bankrupted by his boondoggles, both morally and financially. But it’s not his fault. The liberals will make him do it.

That's a good read, Jim.

David Brooks of The Weekly Standard was on the Medved show 2 days ago. He pointed out how in every forum Brooks has personally observed Romney won't take on the questioner. He gears his answer to the cadence of the questioner...the example he used was "No child left behind"...if the Q was anti-"NCLB"...so was the response...if the Q was pro-"NCLB"...Romney was favorable.

It's the mark of a "good" compromising politician who's trying to embrace all political comers...and voters of all persuasion...the problem is he's so completely swept up in nuancing everything all the time, we never know when his ship is stable...which position is the even keel on the RomneyDial?

Since we're likely to continue to have a Democratic Congress, we don't need a POTUS who will just go along for the ride with Captain Congress (Pelosi) steering the agenda ship...We need somebody who will buck their plans...with the guts to veto their bills...and not play the role of "usher."

Just as he did in Mass, Romney would acquience to the Dems' desires...Same-Sex Marriage? (OK)...mandatory healthcare with your name at the helm? (OK)...and he'd come away saying the same thing..."every act I did as prez was..."

Huckabee is not God’s anointed anymore than Jim Baker was, remember him?

Anybody can learn to quote the Bible and use it to their own advantage which is what I believe Mike Huckabee is doing.

He is so slick he makes my skin crawl.

I don’t believe the abortion regime in this country will ever change until we change some hearts and minds.

In January of '73', the abortion regime in this country was changed by 7 hearts and minds.

For me, I would rather have a nominee who lied to the democrats and then governed as a conservative... [Sevenbak]

If RomneyCare is an example of "governing as a conservative," then I guess we don't have too much to fear from HillaryCare 2.0, eh?

The biggest problem I have had with Mitt was his political pandering, but never with his policies, his record or his conservatism. His record as Governor on abortion was ALWAYS on the side of life, Always, whither or not he campaigned that way.

7, #1, you're saying that Mitt never had any "bully pulpit" as guv. You're saying that his pro-abortion comments during his gubernatorial years never once influenced a woman or teen's thoughts about abortion. (There's no way you can know that).

Even his two pro-life actions in 2005 were sandwhiched around a solid pro-abortion commitment he gave at a press conference May 27, 2005.

#2, folks keep dodging the fact that RomneyCare, just like HillaryCare would do, expanded the abortion industry's reach into our wallets. Bay State taxpayers are now partially paying for abortions for mandated women who earn above Medicaid eligibility levels under RomneyCare. The court order in MA only covered low-income, Medicaid eligible women...and Romney's on the record as saying RomneyCare covered 7% of the MA population...and that 1/4th of them earned $75,000 or more (almost 2% of the female population). Another approximate 3% earned less than $75,000 but above the Medicaid line.

That's almost 5% of the female MA population who are receiving taxpayer subsidized abortions under RomneyCare who were not part of the court order...

Romney went to a Planned Parenthood promotional event with check in hand from his wife in June of '94; followed up by favorably answering PP's political questionnaire in '02; followed up by NOT vetoing their rep role as a permanent spot as a RomneyCare board overseer--even though he vetoed many other portions of that bill! That's a cozy 12-year hitch together. (And yet you call these RomneyCare components as being always on the side of life...Well, if a Planned Parenthood rep is on the side of life, that person had a bigger conversion than Romney ever did!!!

All good reasons, Jim, but Huckabee is only siphoning off votes from our one chance at defeating McCain, and defeating McCain is our only chance at the general. And we cannot in good conscience fail to put our most genuine efforts toward winning the general, seeing who is on the other side and what permanent damage they will do.
