My friends, I have to admit that I've been in a bit of a quandary since the Real Conservatives ® Thompson and Hunter dropped out of the race leaving us to to place our bets on one the four headless horsemen. But after having a day or three to sort it all out, I'm beginning to see a ray of hope.
Number one, my worst fear that the pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun social liberal Rudy Giuliani might be nominated, and thereby bring an abrupt and unholy end to the pro-life conservative movement within the GOP has been allayed. His evil culture of death platform has been soundly rejected by the Republican voters. Thank God! If nothing else is gained, that alone is a huge victory for us!
And that leaves us with the unwelcome slippery task of having to determine and select the least evil of the three remaining RINOs. But wait! When choosing between evils, why not choose the good?
McCain is insane and there are many good reasons not to choose him, but I'll list just five: McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, the Keating 5, and the Gang of 14. No thanks. McCain is out!
Romney ran on a pro-abortion platform, is pro gay rights, is prone to BIG government solutions, promises anything to anyone for a vote, and flip-flops on important issues. Can't trust him.
Now Governor Huckabee. Could this be the good vs evil? He's a Baptist minister. A genuine 100% pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, Southron Christian social conservative!
And that would be my reason no. 1 to support Huckabee. He has the trust and backing of the Christian evangelicals and the support of the Bible Belt. You cannot win the presidency without the South, and I believe the pro-God, pro-life, pro-family, pro-gun, pro-America Mike Huckabee is the most likely of the three GOP hopefuls to carry the South. And that's a pretty darn good reason!
My number two reason is that he is NOT McCain (and that's a pretty darn good reason too).
Number three (and this will be a tough one for a lot of my FReeper Friends) is that he is NOT Romney.
Numbers four and five are he's NOT Hillary and NOT Obama. Oohrah!
Number six, he plays a mean bass and he's a traditional favorite at Free Republic's infamous quadrennial Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC. Perhaps we could persuade President Huckabee to drop by our ball and perform his rocking rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama!" Now, wouldn't that be a hoot!
Number seven, if we can keep Huckabee in the race all the way through, thus preventing McCain or Romney from gaining enough delegates to win the nomination, then maybe, just maybe a deadlocked convention might seek out another candidate. One who can re-unite the Reagan Coalition, save the GOP, and put us back on the conservative track. Of course, my personal favorite to be that man would be FRed Thompson.
Woo hoo!!
Let it ring out through grassroots America and on to the convention! Support life! Support the GOP! Support Huckabee! And re-draft FRed Thompson!!
Never give in, never give up, and never lose hope.
Long live the Reagan Revolution!
Jim Robinson, you may ban me if you like, but your support of Huckabee is basically supporting McCain, the lover of liberal democrats.
Gang of 14
McCain-Kennedy
McCain-Feingold
McCain-Lieberman
etc.
etc.
etc.
I don’t know what your problem is with Romney, but your hatred of him is blinding you to support Huckabee who is liberal in all ways but pro-life. He is also a chronic liar and unethical.
I am deeply disappointed in you, Jim Robinson.
This site, which has been a successful conservative site so far, will go down the tubes now, with the kind of leadership you are showing.
No, but FRed is. GO, FRed, GO!!
I think Huckabee is too focused on class warfare and his attack on Bush’s foreign policy as “arrogant” puts him in the “no” vote category.
I do admire his stand on the social issues, and he made an excellent case for his pro-life stand last night in the debate. But I also think Mitt Romney’s pro-life backers (some activists in that movement) are convinced of his “conversion” to the cause.
So my vote went for Mitt.
I do agree with you: McInsane is not an option, though.
Florida numbers may reflect identity politics, the blue-hair vote.
******************
Yeah, and all those “blue-haired” voters who voted McCain can thank him when their income from their 401k accounts disappears.
McCain recently said he’d love to have interest rates be 0%!
Think about that!
Jim, if your plan doesn’t work, I’m voting for the rat. I’d rather have the rat take the blame for the resulting disaster than a rino. God willing, a true Conservative will surface in 2012 to clean up the mess.
Jim, I think you are absolutely correct, but I think the die is cast.
Romney is out. Why? I had a chance to visit family this past weekend. All of them are traditional Christian conservatives who pay moderate attention to what’s going on.
All of them were in favor of McCain. They knew “of” Romney, but they did not know him. Said they’d really first heard of him just a few months ago.
Obviously, they hadn’t dug deep into the records, so the explanation of their response was that McCain has a decades long recognition as a defense conservative. That was it in a nutshell. Romney isn’t going to get there.
Huckabee....the same name recognition problem, although they are all Baptists and support him because he’s a Baptist. They just didn’t think he was going to win.
So, they are supporting McCain. And they’ve heard that McCain is the only one who can beat Hillary who they don’t want at all.
I think that McCain has it locked up. I don’t say that because I support him, because I don’t.
I think it’s over barring an act of God.
I agree, SD O'Conner and Anthony Kennedy didn't turn out to be conservative enough for most Republicans. However, the outcry against O'Conner was the loudest after Reagan left office. Ditto for Kennedy. O'Conner became a more moderate Justice and swing vote on the high court, after Reagan was out of office. Anthony Kennedy was a pro-life Republican, before he was nominated. He received endorsements from every major pro-life/right to life group in America.
If you know anything about Reagan, he wasn't going to spend his post-Presidency second guessing his picks of O'Conner or Kennedy. Besides, O'Conner had the backing of Reagan advisers Meese and Schultz, along with a solid endorsement from life long conservative and her personal friend, Justice William Rehnquest.
From pages 28 and 29 of the Reagan Diaries:
"Called Judge O'Conner in Ari. & told her she was my nominee for Supreme Ct. Already the flack is starting & from my own supporters. Right to Life people say shes pro-abortion. She declares abortion is personally repugnant to her. I think she'll make a good justice."
"This morning I announced my nominee for the Supreme Court, Mrs. O'Conner of Ariz. I made some calls because someone has started a bonfire among the Right to Life people. Apparently it all started with a woman --- Dr.Gerstan in Phoenix. Her claims don't match the record we have of O'Conner's voting record when she was a state Sen. But she's spread her message far and wide."
Reagan did get to appoint Antonin Scalia to position of Jusitce and Rehnquist to position of Chief Justice. Two outstanding picks. Reagan also made an attempt to get a solid conservative named Robert Bork on the SCOTUS. Ted Kennedy and Arlen Specter fought him all the way and Reagan lost that battle. How Roberts and Alito will turn out 10-20 years down the road isn't clear. History has a way of fooling around with the best of intentions.
I think the response from Huckabee last night, was to show respect for the Reagan legacy and not second guess a decision made 27 years ago.
Thank you. I appreciate your thoughtful answer. Although President Reagan did sign a bad bill into law in the 1960’s, he was undoubtedly a pro-life conservative there after. I agree that conservatives were able to overlook this single issue, looked at his record as a whole and overwhelmingly elected him, twice.
“This site, which has been a successful conservative site so far, will go down the tubes now, with the kind of leadership you are showing.”
Man, we sure heard that a lot when Jim took his stand against Rudy Giuliani.
I think this more than anything is the root of my dislike for the man. As I posted earlier, any man who can go on national TV and argue so intensely FOR abortion and even FOR allowing underage girls to get an abortion with or without parental permission as long as she gets a judge’s approval is no conservative, no Republican, no Christian, not even a man at all. Not then. Not now. Not ever. This evil being has no moral bedrock.
Might as well be Ted Kennedy asking for our vote:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_w9pquznG4
He wants to get a hold of those terrorists also, problem is we’ve gone astray, declared war on a tactic. Lets get it straight, we are to respect other nations borders if want them to respect ours. Put off the war idea, come over to the Ron Paul Constitutional governing once again, and you’ll get lot of the Democratic vote because of Ron Paul’s position on Iraq. Lets battle it out. Ron Paul IS conservative, has been for many years! Check his record! Give up the war in Iraq and lets be a nation together again, based on the governing principles in our Constitution!
I had teenagers to keep my mind from wandering.
And couldn't voting for Romney instead of Huckabee also be considered to be a vote for McCain?
Why would Huckabee desperatly grab delegates just to toss them away for a Thompson VP spot?
Makes no sense.
Because he won’t have more than a couple hundred.
Maybe old Ron Paul is too truthful for anyone to stand.
Most are afraid he would not protect us against the Mooselimbs. Right or wrong, Paul never articulates that.
LOL
I love you Jim, and I agree with you that Huckabee plays a mean bass -— but that is where we part on him. I’m voting for president, not Preacher. Commander in Chief, not Pastor in Chief.
I will not vot for im in my primary on Feb 12, and I hope to God I will ot have to make the awful decision to press the button for him as the Republican nominee on Nov. 4th. I would have voted for Guiliani before Huckabee.
Good plan, Jim. I’m in.
