This is to all of the Freepers who responded to my post. Thank you for a very informative and truly respectful response. I do grin at the post of when I’m around for more than ten days comment, but i’ll take it in good humor. Truly an honor to debate and discuss with well educated and fine Americans who are polite and courteous in their responses. You have not convinced me that background checks are evil, but the passion exhibited for the issue will give me reason enough to reconsider my own position on the matter, again thank all of you.

I just posted the article for the thread. Many others have explained why the Second Amendment should not be infringed without amending the Constitution.

The right to self defense came before our government. El gato has done an excellent job refuting gun grabber nonsense. Welcome to FReeRepublic. We're serious about the Constitution.

Next time you buy a gun, try doing it w/o giving your social. Unless you have a very common name and/or move a lot, you shouldn’t need too. I’ve never given my SSN and never had a problem. But then there likely isn’t more than one or two other people in the US w/ my name.

Not sure about your state, but many states do not attempt to regulate private transfers. If you purchased your firearms at a gun show from a vendor, then most likely he was an FFL dealer.

On the other hand, you and I both attending the show as partons met, and you liked the firearm I was trying to sell, man to man, we could simply exchange the fiream/cash and be done with it. (In reality, I never sell a privately owned piece w/o the buyer Identifying himself via picture Id, and willingness to sign a bill of sale w/address and a affidait attesting that you are not prohibited from possessing firearms or ammo under any law(my defense against the Lautenberg debacle)).

Private sales are “caveat emptor” territory, in my opinion. No warranty, not taxes etc. Anyway, with all the LEOs/BATFE trolling gun sshows these days, felons (mostly known by local LEAs) do not attend, rather they buy illicit pieces on the black market.

At a show in Mid MO recently, the local county sheriff attempted to id everyone entering/leaving the show with a firearm-it did not work. One gentlemen from the FBI (retired) interfered and told them they were violating a slew of 4th amendment and other laws. No mass traffic stops allowed. They stopped. I was one they tried to Id, I told told them to arrest me or let me pass, as I was not driving or doing anything that required a “priviledge” card (driver’s license). The let me walk, but followed me for awhile.

Yea, we can buy from individuals at gun shows in Utah too. I’ve just never done it and didn’t know that’s what the subject was.

I have submitted BATF 4474s without my SSAN from time to time and haven't yet been denied. I have heard of people getting bonked by NICS because they didn't provide a SSAN and it becomes quite a tangle of red tape to clear your good name.

Still, it's a moot point:

BATFE has all of my fingerprints, my photograph, samples of my handwriting, my US Citizen's declaration form with statement of foreign birth, my US passport number, a list of my guns' serials in the NFA registry, my bank account number, bank routing code, my NFA dealer's contact information and address, and sworn testimony that I'm not a drug user, felon, misanthrope, or enemy alien. Then they performed what I'm told is a rigorous background check on me going back through my entire adult life after charging me a few hundred dollars a whack per transaction as a tax. I know it's a tax because they send a $200 tax stamp as proof I've paid their tax. They bundle all of this information together and put it in a big file with my name on it at the US Department of Justice in Washington DC.

I believe that I've volunteered to go above and beyond the typical requirements to satisfy the Federal government so that I can exercise what they themselves allegedly claim is a fundamental God-given 'right'. Personally, I think they're putting me on.

At the state level, my local sheriff personally signed my forms with ink. He knows precisely who I am and has copies of everything I listed above including his own service fee. I also carry a CCW permit which allows the sheriff to perform periodic background checks against me at least twice a month.

Now, Senator Frank Lautenberg (Asshole - NJ) believes that this isn't enough information and I ought to be restricted from buying a gun face to face on private property in a state thousands of miles away from his own. What the hell else does he want from me?

All of those class 3 weapons you've purchased, to start. But you already knew that.

The day they outlaw them is the day after I went paddling across 1,600' deep Lake Tahoe with them in a leaky canoe.

Thank the Lord that I made it to shore alive.

It's amazing that somene selling a gun for hundreds of dollars isn't responsible to buy a $15-20 instant background check.
