Huckabee says his GOP presidential bid isn't on the ropes

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Wednesday he has no intention of following Rudy Giuliani's planned exit from the GOP race and he dismissed suggestions that his candidacy could split the conservative vote and help rival Sen. John McCain.

With a narrowing Republican field, Huckabee could draw votes from Mitt Romney because of his strong support among the religious right - a possible boost for McCain.

"If the true conservatives are looking for a true conservative, they'll pick me. Romney's record is not a conservative record, his rhetoric is not conservative, even with what he's said and done," Huckabee said.

Huckabee surprised by winning the Iowa caucus, but has little money and finished a distant fourth in Florida.

The former Arkansas governor and Baptist preacher was in Newport Beach for a fundraiser at a supporter's home before traveling to Los Angeles for an Americans of Faith event and to Simi Valley for the GOP presidential debate.

Huckabee also pledged not to drop out of the race, despite his poor showing in recent primaries. He said he would focus his campaign on Southern states that are slated for the Tuesday round of primaries.

"Those are all states where we believe we are not only in play, but we are poised to win," he said.

"This boy isn't on the ropes. There's a saying in the South: 'It ain't the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog,'" Huckabee said.

His morning fundraiser in Newport Beach netted more than $100,000, according to organizers.

"Our campaign is so frugal we could go a month on that," Huckabee quipped to about 200 boisterous supporters and volunteers.

Huckabee also was schedule to attend a dinner fundraiser in Thousand Oaks.

Huckabee is just playing one end of a tag team with McCain to shut out Romney. I don’t know what McCain has promised Huckabee, but it must be good. I have to wonder who is financing these guys.

You know, the liberal government in Washington State tried to charge some Republican radio hosts for in kind contributions to political campaigns. Maybe we should try the same thing with some of the media and the McCain/Huckabee campaigns. It won’t go anywhere, but what the heck, it would at least bring attention to it.

“Huck lies before God. Huck is in this to help McCain. McCain knew that somehow he had to neutralize the Conservative base. Huck was part of that strategy. McCain’s first order as President will be to issue EO’s giving defacto Amnesty and 2nd, he will carry out a plan to “punish” the conservative base. McCain is a very vengeful, petty man. May God grant us a miracle and not have McCain as our nominee. Our Republic is truly at risk.”

PING for truth!

Don’t worry about McCain winning, worry about obama or hillary, either of whom will crush McInsane. I see so many ‘conservatives’ in here who are trashing Romney, having no clue that if Romney doesn’t get the nod then America loses a potentially great leader, and a truly honorable man, and gains either a RINO or a Communist. Suckabee needs to get lost so Romney can take his votes and defeat the RINO McInsane, but Suckabee seems to be in the tank for the Juan McCain.

The title is correct. The Huckster has really been campaigning for the VP slot from Day 1. Ping.

He’s not dumb, he’s just doing his master’s (McCain) bidding.

Huck’s only purpose in this race is to siphon votes away from any conservative alternative to McCain.

Huck is in this to help McCain.

Yep. McCain knows he wouldn't win a one on one fight with a conservative candidate in a Republican primary. The Huckster's mission is to siphon enough conservative votes so McCain can slip in. I just hope enough of his supporters figure that out before it's too late.

I have a question to put forth, maybe someone has an answer that can clear things up for me.

If evangelicals hate Mormons and won’t vote for one. Why would a Mormon vote for an evangelical? Bush is a Christian. Did he get the Mormon vote?

This would be a reason that Huck can forget it and Mitt can forget.

But all these people will let a devil like McCain or Hillary rule them. Go figger?

Maybe someone has an answer to that.

Not Romney but Ted Kennedy called Obama Osama.

You cannot deny it - when a conservative makes a gaffe, it is big news. When a liberal or MSM favorite makes one, it is not big deal. MSM has trashed Dan Quayle for the slightest mistake, or fabricated a mistake. Others also. Yet McCain and Huckabee are getting a pass for even serious errors.

Probably Huckabee, Crist (FL), Pawlenty (MN), and Lindsey Grahmnesty to name a few, and maybe Rudy and Lieberman.

Good question. Wouldn't surprise me if he promised it to Rudy last night to get his endorsement.

Well, I try to stay on good terms with the fans of the other guys, mostly. I can understand why people support Huck or Mitt or whoever. I just don’t trust them to follow through on their Road to Des Moines conversions and refuse to support them

"Yah, he was only one of 4 Republicans to win statewide office in 130 years in Arkansas. And won 4 elections in a row."

One of 6 (Winthrop Rockefeller, Sr; Footsie Britt; Frank White; Huckster; Win Paul Rockefeller & Tim Hutchinson). And he'll be the last Republican to win statewide office for the forseeable future because of his incompetent leadership.
