“What is wrong in Vermont, anyway???”

Too any burnt out, aging Hippies. Just think that Vermont was the only state in the Union that did not vote for FDR.

In 1936 there were two states that voted for Alf Landon--Maine and Vermont. Maine never voted for FDR in the other three elections (1932, 1940, or 1944) either.

In the 19th century Maine voted a little earlier than the other states and often voted for the winner, so there was a saying, "As Maine goes, so goes the nation." After the 1936 there was a revised version, "As Maine goes, so goes Vermont." It may have been Jim Farley who said that.

The west coast hippies left San Fran to go to Washington and Oregon, while the east coast contingent went to Vermont. I think all three states are at the bottom of the list in terms of sales of soap and razor blades, to say nothing of deoderant. ;-)
