(Vanity) Pool: When will the New York Times publish its green light McCain hit piece?
New York Times ^ | January 29, 2008 | Vanity

Posted on 01/29/2008 10:37:31 PM PST by Plutarch

At some point, when McCain becomes the presumptive GOP nominee, the mainstream media will switch its McCain coverage from positive to negative. The positive coverage has been to ensure this maverick gains the nomination, the negative coverage will be to dismantle him so as to clear the path for the Democrat nominee.

The MSM takes its cue from the New York Times, so the McCain attacks will not begin in earnest until the NYT publishes gives the green light by publishing a front page McCain hit piece.

Post your guess as to the date of the New York Times McCain hit piece. As a bonus, pick the subject. Examples include his age, health, temperament, Keating Five, first wife, war monger, etc.

I’ll agree with the others that it it will be after the conventions. I will also add that it won’t be all-in-one. It will be a series of “exposees” of the man who would be president and why on second review, their earlier favorable positions were all wrong.

No matter what McCain does, he will not be the favored candidate for the general election.

Here’s something the NYT is hanging onto...

Isn’t it something that “they” endorsed him?

Labor Day. I actually think it will come in two stages. First, an attack from the right to suppress the base. Easy as pie. Second, an October "surprise" revisiting the Keating 5.

Only trouble is, the Democrats will be selling a candidate who belongs to a church that wouldn't welcome 85% of the American public. Or, more likely, someone with more actual baggage than McCain and a 48% disapproval rating. Shapes up to be a resoundingly negative campaign.

I don't think the New York Times has the ability to restrain the entire journalistic community from all getting their shot at the GOP nominee. So, no sooner will John McCain be the presumptive nominee, or overwhelming favorite, then the attacks will commence. They won't want to wait, but make it a long, drawn out, tortuous process. If McCain wins the majority of delegates on Super-Duper Tuesday, then he will be anointed. The next several days will be devoted to analyzing the changes in the race.

So, my guess is for Sunday February 5th. I think it they will start in on his age and infirmities. Newsweek has already jumped the gun: How Old is Too Old?

THey endorsed him because they are sitting on a story about him having an affair with a lobbyist.

Actually, it will start out slow and build. I think that they will start out with stories about his age and how vibrant Clinton is ... this can build for a long time.

This is what did Bob Dole in 96 - it built over time, and hit everywhere when he slipped on the platform.

Several freepers mentioned video footage of McCain coming down the steps of a plane, and having to be helped by his wife Cindy. Now with the MSM pushing McCain, that footage is buried, but in coming months any trips, slip ups, signs of frailty, infirmity, voice changes, memory lapses, etc., why these will be looped and the image burned into our retinas.

The first article I've seen about McCain that isn't altogether positive. A harbinger of that to come.
