PBS Station fending off creditors [Brother, can you spare $450,000]
Peoria Journal-Star ^

Posted on 01/29/2008 10:57:19 AM PST by Sir Hailstone

If WTVP, Channel 47, can raise another $450,000, the public television station and its creditors will have reached a tentative deal for $5.25 million.

"We're excited," said station board president P. Joseph O'Neill. "Everybody is weary of this. The banks are. We are. We just have to find this last amount of money."

The station has been scrambling for money since early December, after Bank of America and Commerce Bank demanded it pay off a $10.3 million loan. With penalties and interest, the balance stood at $7.2 million - and that was after WTVP used most of its cash reserves to pay down debt and extend the deal to Jan. 15.

Why not just show "Overdrawn At The Memory Bank" over and over again? It's MST3K and public broadcasting!

I can’t help wondering what they spent the money on

During the last go-round where the local PBS station was begging for money, they made far and above over their target. Did they stop when they reached their goal? Nope. Did they lower the goal the next time they begged for money? Nope.

I'm not a fan of PBS. Also, anyone that says it's commercial-free doesn't have a clue. The only diff is that they put their commercials at the beginning and ends of shows, while "commercial" TV sticks them in the middle.

I've also decided that Elmo is evil. But that's another conversation.

I though Ray Croc’s wife left them $260,000,000 a couple of years ago. I wonder where that went.

If PBS doesn't do it, who will notice?

All I know is that today's Sesame Street ain't what I grew up watching.

It's fit for children. That's about all I can say. Honestly, it impressed me more as an hour-long Elmo commercial, than children's progamming.

Our kids rarely watch TV. And then, it's closely monitored.

Thank G-d for DVD sets and YouTube. :-)
Between the two, I get my MST3K fix.

PBS uses public funds and donations from the ignorant and then run Dixie Chick Marketing Programs, ie, America, Capitalism, GW and the Military are evil as well as Christians and Republicans.

A fifty something refugee from the Media has warned us for years about the mediots losing jobs in the Media and going to non profits to lie and spin for a pay check.

They have been completely cutting edge, but I didn’t expect they were that much in debt. Since Caterpillar is based there, I thought they had funded the expense.
***************************************************
According to the rest of the article they were current and hadn’t missed but their letter of credit specified a certain number of donors and they basically had fewer donors at more $$$ per donor than specified... As the letter of credit had to be revoked the station made out with the bank eating $2M ...
