NY NOW: "Betrayal!" [NY NOW attacks Ted Kennedy for betraying women]
The Politico ^ | 28 Jan 08 | Ben Smith

Whoa. The New York State chapter of the National Organization for Women attacked Ted Kennedy for his endorsement today with some real heat.. The Times Union reported it first (writing, "'Scathing' feels inadequate here."), and I confirmed its authenticity with the president of the organization, Marcia Pappas.

I started to pick out the most eyebrow-raising passages but, that proved kind of hard, so here's the whole thing:

“Women have just experienced the ultimate betrayal. Senator Kennedy’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic presidential primary campaign has really hit women hard. Women have forgiven Kennedy, stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few. Women have buried their anger that his support for the compromises in No Child Left Behind and the Medicare bogus drug benefit brought us the passage of these flawed bills. We have thanked him for his ardent support of many civil rights bills, BUT women are always waiting in the wings.

“And now the greatest betrayal! We are repaid with his abandonment! He’s picked the new guy over us. He’s joined the list of progressive white men who can’t or won’t handle the prospect of a woman president who is Hillary Clinton (they will of course say they support a woman president, just not “this” one). ‘They’ are Howard Dean and Jim Dean (Yup! That’s Howard’s brother) who run DFA (that’s the group and list from the Dean campaign that we women helped start and grow). They are Alternet, Progressive Democrats of America, democrats.com, Kucinich lovers and all the other groups that take women’s money, say they’ll do feminist and women’s rights issues one of these days, and conveniently forget to mention women and children when they talk about poverty or human needs or America’s future or whatever.

“This latest move by Kennedy, is so telling about the status of and respect for women’s rights, women’s voices, women’s equality, women’s authority and our ability – indeed, our obligation - to promote and earn and deserve and elect, unabashedly, a President that is the first woman after centuries of men who ‘know what’s best for us.’”

As with many of these advocacy groups, different chapters wield varying influence in different states, and NOW isn't the sort of political player in New York that, say, NARAL, is.

Still.

UPDATE: National NOW puts out a conciliatory statement.

You’d think they could have gotten around to condemning him back when Mary Jo drowned.

Not the first woman he’s abandoned.

Guess NOW feels hurt and helpless...watching him swim away.

Wow, thanks for the post. It is fascinating to see how different Democratic Party groups can be called on to do the dirty work of some of the Candidates. They have absolutely no shame, no sense of fair play, and no ethics.

I can't wait to see what the Reverennnnnnnnnnnd Jessie Jackson has to say about all this. I also can't wait to see what the AFofL CIO has to say about all of this. Finally, it will be interesting to see what the National Education Association has to say. Already, the California Teachers have had a blood bath fight over who they will endorse.

If we are lucky, we may even see Bill's Presidential Pardoned drug dealers and financial crooks make endorsements for Hillary. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

I wonder if the Chinese government that appears to have been funneling money to the Clinton's will come out and formally support Hillary. Inquiring minds want to know.

Yea but just wait till the general election. You think the racist accusations are flying now. The Democrats will stoup to new lows when it comes to race baiting. I hope the GOP won’t allow them to get away with it but of course they will.

Wonderful news!

This could very well tear the rat party apart at the seams, since the dims have depended heavily upon the black vote.

Let’s see. The Kennedy clan has been known to womanize, rape, pillage, and even kill women over the course of this families history in the U.S. (JFK’s known and unknow trysts with many women is legendary is it not?). Edward’s little “car” accident resulted in the death of Mary Jo. One of the Kennedy cousins was tried (but got off) for a rape charge. There are people who know much more about this subject than I who could provide even more details about this family and it’s treatment of women. So, why is NOW now complaining about Teddy Kennedy and his recent support for a non-woman running for President - as if this should be some sort of surprise?????

So....A known serial abuser of women (who left one to die while he slunk off) refuses to support the wife of another known serial abuser of women - and this makes the organization that purports to support women go berserk.

Strange world we live in.

Mike Kennedy raping his kids baby sitter.

Mike Skakel killing Martha Moxley.

Because the skanks in NOW want a president they can relate to. That would be the lesbian.
