Lets face it: the majority of those who supported Fred Thompson did so because they sincerely believed that he was the only reliable conservative in the race. Few questioned his commitment to conservative principles. Not even his opponents, who picked on his speaking style and campaign schedule rather than his policy proposals, questioned his principles.
Upon Thompsons withdrawal, Mitt Romney released the following statement: Throughout this campaign, Fred Thompson brought a laudable focus to the challenges confronting our country and the solutions necessary to meet them. He stood for strong conservative ideas and believed strongly in the need to keep our conservative coalition together.
Wow! One heck of an admission for a candidate whose campaign has centered on claiming the embodiment of Reaganite principles.
Romney then said that Thompson focused on pulling together the old Reagan coalition, the conservative coalition of social, economic and foreign policy conservatives . . . And so his leaving the race is sad for those who were big fans of his, but it probably helps my effort in terms of bringing together those Reagan coalition individuals, and it probably will be a bit of a boost for me.

Whether she or obama ruin the country in the name of the liberal democrat party or McRomnstain ruins it in the name of the “centrist” GOP the result is the same.
The problem is that the GOP faithful, blind as a tapeworm but faithful, will be sad to see thier party blamed once again for America’s woes resulting from socialist, class envy policies.
Bingo!!
You’re right.
“Why Fredheads Can Embrace John McCain and Mitt Romney”
This FredHead will vote for McCain shortly after Hell freezes over.
You don't have to "embrace" any of them. You can vote for one of them, without convincing yourself that either are as good as the original option. That's what annoys me about so many at FR. They loved Fred and they think they have to love someone new now. I'm okay being politically celibate post-Fred. That's an option, too.
The RNC would be well advised to remember the reason for its very existence.
That’s an easy one and they haven’t forgotten. Win elections for the guy with an R behind his name who follows thier marching orders which are handed to them from the board room and K Street.
Mr. Thompson is still on the ballot in Maryland.
In the event of a brokered convention, the party could conceivably turn to Mr. Thompson.
Not gonna happen with Mr. Keyes, whom I wouldn’t want to be president, anyway. As I said, if fitness for office weren’t an issue, just being conservative enough, then I’d vote for myself.
sitetest
I’d call this being a political hosebag. The politically celibate will be staying home and not getting screwed by the RNC.
A case study of reading into a situation what you want, as well as grouping people together.
I would think by now that FR’s crackup had ended. Back to the NFL threads—as soon as they get over the Patriots, anyway.
“Romney is a conservative.”
Since when? Since he joined the NRA two weeks before running for office (literally)?
Look, I know he’s mouthing all the right things now, but before he decided to run for President he was pro-gay, pro-abortion, anti-RKBA, pro-socialized medicine, and general liberal.
I understand tactical voting for the lesser of evils, but don’t try to sell us this crap that Romney is a conservative.
Mitt might be a slighly less putrid liberal than Hillary, but that’s about it.
Oh please, I think I'm going to be sick.
Just get the primaries over with now, so I can get the nasty business of holding my nose and voting for one of 'em done as quickly as possible.
I think I’ll just hurl at the title of this thread.
I won't get the Romney/McCain STDs, that's for sure.
Maybe we can get something going...
The naiveté is absolutely stunning. It doesn’t matter what a politician says during a campaign, what matters is what he’s done. That will tell you what he’most likely to do in the future.
HA!!
"If the milk turns out to be sour, I ain't the kinda pussy to drink it."
heh heh heh, Fred might do pretty good here in Texas after all. My last vote here in Texas went to Kinky, which BTW got nearly one third of the vote. Governer Goodhair Perry almost had a new job flippin burgers...
