Van de Putte picked to give Democrats' Spanish response to Bush speech

AUSTIN – Sen. Leticia Van de Putte has never been one to shy away from a fight, whether leading fellow Democrats on a 45-day walkout to New Mexico in 2003 or standing alone last year in support of a controversial plan to vaccinate young girls against a sexually transmitted virus.

Her skills as a lawmaker in a Texas Legislature dominated by the opposing party propelled her to the presidency of the nonpartisan National Conference of State Legislatures – the first Texan and first Hispanic in that post.

And now the San Antonio Democrat, a pharmacist and mother of six, is ready to step onto a national stage to contrast her party's views with those of the nation's best-known Texan and Republican, President Bush.

She will deliver the Spanish Democratic response to the president's State of the Union speech tonight; Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will give the English one.

Ms. Van de Putte was selected for the role by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"It's a big honor, and I was delighted when Speaker Pelosi called," Ms. Van de Putte said. "I have been asked to do this with a Latino point of view, knowing that Latinos in this country share all Americans' anxiety about the direction of our nation."

Ms. Van de Putte, 53, who worked with Mr. Bush in the 1990s when he was governor of Texas and she was in the House said that while she has been disappointed with the Bush presidency, she has no plans to attack Mr. Bush in her national address.

"We need to be thinking about the future, not the past," she said.

Good - let’s broadcast what the Dems are trying to make of this country.

Then let’s have someone point out the consequences of amnesty if the Dems get the WH.
