After a decade fighting to stop illegal file-sharing, the music industry will give fans today what they have always wanted...
*snip*
... Nor is a lack of compatibility with the iPod player expected to put fans off...
*snip*
... Qtrax files contain Digital Rights Management software...

Uh, no, DRM-laden music in some goofball proprietary format is not what music consumers want.

Is this news just a rumor or actual fact? (if this question is answered in the following comments, ignore question).

All it would take would be for the music industry to create a market for music. An actual market.

If songs were made available for sale, and priced according to their popularity, then it would work fine, IMO. Charging the exact same amount for a 40-year-old, obscure song from a group nobody knows as you do for the current #1 smash on the charts, it foolish.

If there were a legal, pay site, with non-DRM .MP3s of high quality, where the pricing was free to float according to demand, and the whole process was convenient, then it would probably succeed, IMO.

I’d rather spend the money than look at flashing ads online.

iPod compatability coming? Sweet. For all the claims iTunes makes, they have a severe shortage of music not considered “mainstream”.

Not for me. Anything at 160 or greater is wonderful, and 128 is acceptable, even though it wipes out some bass - and I am a bass player! ;)

If I want to seriously listen to music, it’s vinyl.
