Mayor's Text Messages Show Romantic Getaways On City Dime

POSTED: 11:37 pm EST January 26, 2008
UPDATED: 1:27 am EST January 27, 2008

DETROIT -- More potentially damaging evidence of perjury by Detroit's mayor has been uncovered by the Detroit Free Press just a couple of days after the paper released thousands of personal text messages between the mayor and his chief of staff.

The sexually charged messages between Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty explicitly indicated that a romantic relationship did exist between them despite their denials under oath during last summer's police whistleblower trial.

The newly released messages present evidence of more than one romantic rendezvous between Kilpatrick and Beatty, including trips to Houston, Virginia and Denver.

One exchange went like this:

Kilpatrick: "I just made my reservation."

Beatty: "You made it Denver? Leaving when and returning when?"

Kilpatrick: "Nov. 7th- 8:57 return Nov. 10th-11:25. Arrive at 4:11."

Beatty: "…Should I take the same flight?"

Kilpatrick: "Yes."

A credit card statement shows the mayor used his city credit card to reserve a $474 room at the exclusive Sonnenalp Resort of Vail, Colo.

According to the mayor's official calendar, the paper said, Nov. 7-10, 2002, was listed as "Hold for mayor gone fishing."

A text message from Beatty says the mayor asked her to perform a sexual act on him at the club. She did not, but later wrote to him that she wished she had.

Meanwhile, there have been mixed reactions from Detroit officials who spoke with Local 4 on condition of anonymity.

One official said Kilpatrick should resign, saying, "He gets a kick out of lying. He's able to do it. There's nobody above the law and as an attorney he should know better. This has consumed everything. This city has to go on. He should resign."

Another Detroit officeholder forgives the mayor, saying, "This has nothing to do with his ability to lead and move forward. There are so many spouses who cheat, but everything we do as public officials is magnified. He does need to come forward, but it's a huge blow to his self esteem."

"but it's a huge blow to his self esteem."

I'm betting it wasn't his self-esteem that was getting blows...

And the mayor's "private life" is going to cost the city of Detroit almost 9 million bucks.

Way to go, voters of Detroit!

Well Bill Clinton should be proud. He set the meme, it doesn’t matter what kind of cheating lying scum an elected official is in their private life, as long as they can “lead” in their official capacity. Character officially has no relevance any longer. From Washington, Lincoln, and the like, to this.

Oh, they’ll be proud. Just look at how proud they were of Marion Barry.

Everything from "boy its cold outside" to "that homie got bling!".........

In other words, the city council is so damn corrupt and living so damn high on the state funding (hardly anyone left in Detroit to pay their exhorbitant salaries) that none of those crooks is willing to point any finger of criticism towards da Kwami..........

Remember, this is the same city that for over 20 years supported the racist Coleman Young while he systematically drove out most of the businesses that supported the city's tax structure........Nothing has changed other than the the names.......

He does. Nobody knows better how to flout the law than an attorney.

What could possibly be a more sure recipe for disaster than an attorney in an executive's position?

I wouldn’t care that he said these things. I would care that he broke a commitment to his wife, stole tax payers money, and made Detroit even more a laughingstock.

What kind of a name is that? Something like Mohammed MacDonald?

I think Kwame may actually be in real trouble this time. I watched some man on the street interviews and folks seemed to be pretty irritated this time.

They may not convict him of anything but I have a feeling he may face a tough reelection bid next time. Seems like a great time for Rootie to drop the presidential bid and move to Detroit so he can run for mayor.

I’m sure that tact will be tried, too. However, the local union of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees wants his head on a chopping block. This one’s (hopefully) not going to be as easy for him to coast through. The stumbling block is going to be the POS Wayne County Prosecutor. I’m convinced she’s on the take.

An editorial from the DFP....

City deserves truth and full pursuit of justice

It'll be interesting to see if they stay torqued off.

The editorial also mentions Kym Worthy, who doesn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence.

If he’s not prosecuted for this now, memories will fade and he will get re-elected for sure.

They will. They are responsible for all this coming to light.
