DENVER (CNA) - John McCain has set his sights on Florida as the states primary draws closer. In a conversation with Catholics in Florida and CNA this afternoon, McCain maintained his support for embryonic stem cell research while emphasizing his hope that it will become an academic issue given the latest scientific advances.
When he was asked how he reconciled his otherwise solid pro-life voting record with his support for experimentation on surplus embryos, Sen. McCain called his decision to back the research a very agonizing and tough decision.
He continued, saying, All I can say to you is that I went back and forth, back and forth on it and I came in on one of the toughest decisions Ive ever had, in favor of that research. And one reason being very frankly is those embryos will be either discarded or kept in permanent frozen status. The senator, while standing firm on his decision added, I understand how divisive this is among the pro-life community.
Referring to the recent break through in stem cell research which allows scientists to use skin cells to create stem cells, McCain said that, I believe that skin stem cell research has every potential very soon of making that discussion academic
. Sam Brownback and others are very encouraged at this latest advance
.
On the issue of appointments to the Supreme Court, McCain mentioned that Sam Brownback would play an advisory role in helping decide who he should nominate for the Supreme Court. As models of who he would select, John McCain pointed to Justices Samuel Alito and Antonin Scalia. Pro-life advocates see the choice of Supreme Court Justices as key to overturning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized abortion.

Mcstain is a member of the Gang of fourteen !
John McCain can kiss my Catholic arse!
mrs
The latest poll by Zogby showed:
* Catholics favoring McCain
* Evangelicals evenly split among McCain, Huck and Romney
* Other churches favoring Romney
So looks like McCain is getting it done among the Catholics.
Why is Sam Brownback supporting him? I don’t get it.
So do Romney and Huckabee.
What a turd, yet folks will go out and vote for him because the MSM tells them so.
McCain might stop shagging kids ping!
Romney, McCain, Huckabee and Guiliani...that's what we are left with. DAMMIT!! How did we allow it to get to this point? Romney, McCain and Guiliani all support the culture of death and Huckabee is a liberal but more pro-life than the other three. I am totally peeved. If Alan Keyes is on the ballot in Maryland I am voting for him just like I did in 2000. U.S. Army Retired |
That's nice. And considering the spiritual state of many Catholics these days, he'll likely get support.
But not from this Catholic.
Don’t fool ourselves, if Brownback can support McCain, Huck could support him just as easy.
Politics corrupts. So sad!
Life is life is life. Experimentation on, and medical exploitation of, human beings is disgusting, worse in many ways than murder, because it is so cold blooded.
Are those Catholics Kennedy & his sandwich Senator friend, Dodd, or Biden, etc.
That is who i’ll be supporting in Texas...
I am tired of compromise... I will do it no more. the GOP needs to get the message.
“Why is Sam Brownback supporting him? I dont get it.”
That endorsement really disappointed me. It seems as if McCain’s position on amnesty trumps the life issue. I hope that’s not true about Brownback.
A good traditional Catholic.
Yep. I had the honor of attending Mass with him this morning.
And I’m an evangelical.
