Charleston WV was enveloped in a eye/lung irritating white cloud at about 1 pm....no alarms were sounded...I made calls to police and emailed newspapers. Finally there was a confusing blurb in our Daily Mail indicating that the substance was from the Bayer plant, and was an accidental release of a component of Larvin. The Daily Mail initially indicated a shelter in place for most of our county was called. Still no alarms, and the local emergency AM station was ignoring the massive cloud of gas.

Now the news continues to be confusing, and it is now stated that the cloud is from the giant coal burning John Amos power plant. At the bottom of a news article, it is indicated that a similar plant in Ohio resulted in massive injuries due to a cloud of sulfuric acid, and that the town had to be abandoned.

My lungs are still burning from this release of “whatever” in Charleston, WV.....I am disappointed in the local emergency reaction. If it HAD been more poisonous, then an entire city may have been poisoned without adequate emergency response.

Whoa...are you staying inside, I hope?

Since it’s dark now - do you know if the cloud of whatever is still as strong or is it dissipating?

Stay safe -and thanks for the local information- keep us posted.

a component of Larvin

From bayercropscience.com:

One of the best ways for cotton growers to plan on harvesting more pounds of higher quality lint is with the use of LARVIN® insecticide/ovicide. Research has shown that applying LARVIN not only results in effective ovicidal and/or larvicidal action against Heliothis, but also represents an important part of a resistance management program.

Applied at the ovicidal rate, LARVIN provides three-way control other ovicides just can't match. First, LARVIN kills eggs on contact. Second, the residual activity of LARVIN kills eggs that are newly laid on spray residue. And third, LARVIN delivers powerful control of neonate larvae by ingestion of egg membrane. Since LARVIN is a selective insecticide ovicide, it won't trigger secondary pest flare-ups such as aphids.

Charleston WV was enveloped in a eye/lung irritating white cloud at about 1 pm

This happens about twice a week in Newark to motorists on the Pulaski Skyway.

I am not joking.

Here is a copy of the first news release posted on the Daily Mail website several hours after the chlorine smelling cloud had enveloped Charleston, WV, on 1/25/08...I emailed this to my friends as no other alarms or news sites had ANY info/notices of problem:

” Kanawha County officials on Friday afternoon called for residents to shelter in place following reports of a chemical haze with a chlorine odor in a widespread area from South Charleston to Nitro.

“No one is admitting responsibility,” said Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper. “It is a wide area with a visible haze and a noticeable smell reported as a chlorine odor.”

The Emergency Operations Center was activated about 3 p.m. today, and plants throughout the valley were contacted about the matter, he said.

“We are using the emergency broadcast system,” Carper said. “We have no information on the source, the origin, or the product. We are logging the area and complaints are coming in.”

Carper said residents were asked to shelter in place and call 911 if they felt any distress.

Update from your link:

UPDATE @ 7:58PM:
Dale Petry, the emergency services director for Kanawha County, says emergency response teams are setting up at different places around the county to monitor the haze & smell. He’s hoping special equipment on the response trucks will be able to help identify what is causing it.

Petry also confirms that county emergency officials went up in a helicopter Friday with DEP officials to see if the source of the haze cand be pinpointed — but they didn’t find anything conclusive.

According to Petry, firefighters went to chemical plants in the valley and set up monitoring systems — and no traces of any leaks were detected.

Right now: Petry says there is almost no wind, causing the cloud to stay put. He adds, though, that it is moving north slightly toward Sissonville.

No, that was the blue-green haze that was found to be caused by algae.
