What’s even sadder is that you can get vaccinated against it. Parents should know this.

Thanks for the link. What a nice looking young man and what a tragedy for his friends and family. My thoughts and prayers are with them. The article at the link also mentions that it was meningococcal meningitis which is what I had assumed. I teach microbiology so I am always wondering what the causative organism is when I read news accounts that don't include that information. In this case, the organism was Neisseria meningitidis which causes the epidemic form of meningitis. If they treat his close contacts with rifampin, they should be fine.
