The hundreds of thousands of immigrants working in the United States illegally are still expected to pay income taxes. The program works by providing a special tax identification number instead of a Social Security number and participants are guaranteed that the information can't be used to deport them.
But the program's critics say that it amounts to the Internal Revenue Service abetting illegal immigrants.

An inquiring mind wants to know.

Um... OK fine. We'll help you break the law as long as you cut US in. There's a mixed message for you.
Uh, if memory serves me right, ITINs were assigned to immigrants legally working in the US. I don’t think it was intended for illegals.
Well, here we have a million illegal immigrants with their known addresses who could be deported tomorrow. That might put a dent in their numbers. The only reason they could have for wanting to document that they are here, paying taxes, is so they can be sure to quality for AMNESTY the next time it comes up. Wonder what they know that we don’t know.
“They say the onus is on employers to verify the legal status of their employees.”
How many more times can this buck be passed around?
It’s the Federal Government’s responsibility...
It’s the employer’s responsibility...
It’s not this department’s responsibility...
Enough.
Are ya freakin' kiddin' me? OF COURSE it should be used to deport them............
In light of the "stimulus deal" agreed on today, will illegal immigrants get refunds of $600 to $1,200,and more if they have children?
Hmmmmmmmmmm, let me mull that over for a while.........YES YES YES YES YES YES of course they will!
And the whole bunch should be sent to prison.
“and participants are guaranteed that the information can’t be used to deport them”
Aiding and abetting a felony? Must a dhimmiRat idea...
According to PeLousy, earlier today, the checks would be predicated on 2007 tax returns, so if the illegal paid taxes, it’s likely a check is on the way. Maybe they can use it to bribe poll workers so they can vote for more dhimmiRats and get more checks...
And plead that I'm just doing what every day Americans just won't do.
President Bush will give me a pardon and amnesty. See. It's so easy.
The “stimulus deal” was so bipartisan, and the President wants it done Now!;)
Since millions of them already live in HUD housing and they get all their medical care free, plus free education. Why would you grip over a silly little old unearned tax check. What kind of uncaring and unfeeling right winger are you. Message brought to you by the elect John McCain committee, Ted Kennedy treasurer! :^)
How so? The ITIN does not give an alien the right to work here.
[begin Form]
Form W-7 (Rev. January 2007) Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service.
Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
For use by individuals who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
An IRS individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) is for federal tax purposes only.
Before you begin:
Do not submit this form if you have, or are eligible to obtain, a U.S. social security number (SSN). Getting an ITIN does not change your immigration status or your right to work in the United States and does not make you eligible for the earned income credit. [My emphasis]
. . . . [End]
My wife had an ITIN for years when we lived in Japan. When we first got married 15 years ago all I had to do was write “non-resident alien” in the spouse’s SSN space on our 1040. Later she was required to get an ITIN by the IRS. She never used it for anything except taxes. When we transfered to the States and she got her green card she got a regular SSN.
(2) ELIGIBLE INDIVIDUAL- The term `eligible individual' means any individual other than-- `(A) any nonresident alien individual,..
Well good, the illegal immigrant rights groups should be raising hell soon;)
“Uh, if memory serves me right, ITINs were assigned to immigrants legally working in the US. I dont think it was intended for illegals.”
You are correct and those here illegally or using fraudulent means to obtain a tax ID are subject to prosecution.
