Hillary Now Having To Defend Bill
Captain's Quarters ^ | Jan. 24, 2008 | Ed Morrissey

Posted on 01/24/2008 7:11:25 AM PST by jdm

The Hillary Clinton campaign has a serious problem, and it now forces her to spend time on the defensive. People expected Bill Clinton's history to be an issue in a general election, but few would have predicted that Bill's campaigning would present so many obstacles for Hillary in a primary. She had to defend her husband after a dumb remark about a supposed "hit job" from Barack Obama went viral in a CNN video yesterday:

Hillary Rodham Clinton, defending her husband's increasingly vocal role in her presidential effort, sidestepped questions about whether Bill Clinton's suggestion that Barack Obama had put a "hit job" on him was language befitting a former president. ...

The former president also reacted angrily upon being told that Dick Harpootlian, a former South Carolina Democratic chairman and Obama supporter, had called the Clinton campaign "reprehensible" and suggested it had borrowed tactics from Lee Atwater, the late South Carolina GOP strategist who famously practiced negative campaigning.

In response, Bill Clinton noted that there had been no outcry from reporters when Obama put out a "hit job" on him.

He didn't elaborate on what he meant, and Hillary Clinton refused to speculate in the interview.

Hit job? What hit job? Neither Bill nor Hillary could give an answer for that question, and for good reason -- it didn't exist. Bill simply made it up in order to push back against the question asked of him by the reporter in the video. It's a classic "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" response, telling a lie loud enough to distract people from the malfeasance at hand.

At one point, not long ago, people considered Bill so brilliant at campaigning that some worried that he would outdo his wife so badly as to discredit her. That analysis obviously no longer applies; instead, the worry is how badly will Bill damage her through his own gaffes. He now has Hillary having to answer for his ridiculous statements to a press that Bill is antagonizing, and he's making Barack Obama look like the latest victim in the Clinton smear machine.

And this is just the primaries. Imagine how the Republicans could goad Bill into more meltdown moments.

How long will Hillary put up with Bill? The better question might be how much more of this will it take to remind American voters of all the dishonest nonsense perpetrated by the Clintons during their first period of power. If this continues, it will just convince Americans that they do not want to put up with either Hillary or Bill for another four years.

UPDATE: Leading Democrats have now gone public against Bill Clinton:

In Washington, Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), who endorsed Obama last week, castigated the former president for what he called his "glib cheap shots" at Obama, saying both sides should settle down but placing the blame predominantly on Clinton.

"That's beneath the dignity of a former president," Leahy told reporters, adding: "He is not helping anyone, and certainly not helping the Democratic Party."

That concern was also voiced by some neutral Democrats, who said that the former president's aggressive role, along with the couple's harsh approach recently, threatens to divide the party in the general election.

The disaster continues. When Democrats come out and publicly scold Bill Clinton, people see that the damage has been both real and substantial.

That's beneath the dignity of a former president

Considering Leahy & Clinton have neighboring townhouses in the gutter that's rich.

Still, Billy Jeff long ago shed anything resembling dignity - and we got to go along for the ride.

I think they were so taken back by the response a likable bright Barak Obama was getting from White America and of course Black America the only way they could slow it down is play the race card. Bill Clinton is showing the rest of the country what we have know all along, he is nothing but a racist sleezeball not fit to inhabit the White House. He and his wife if they win have set the cause of Black Americans back decades by resorting to the tactics used for generations by the likes of a David Duke and Maddox. I hope come November they reap what they sew.

Hillary went to the matresses for all those bimbo erruptions over the years for her bill............and I’d be willing to bet she WOULD get into a physical cat fight if the secret service was not around to keep the riff raff away from them.....they are just high rent trailer trash. After all her brothers the Rodham boys HAVE been in those kinds of fights.

My theory, Bubba is in a titantic internal wrestling match between his lust for power and attention and his fear of having a chastity belt slapped on him by Queen Hillary if she succeeds and becomes president. Can you imagine the life he would have in the White House? There is no way she would allow him to tarnish her moment of glory that she has deserved and is part of her birthright!

At the moment he appears to be more interested in sinking her ship than helping her. They are one messed up partnership. How the Dem voters could want these guys back in charge is beyond me.

Exactly. The Clintons are playing Good Clinton / Bad Clinton - with Hillary getting to play “Good Clinton”.

The Clintons have gotten BARACK OBAMA off message. They have gotten BARACK OBAMA off center by forcing him to defend himself.

The ironic thing is that OBAMA doesn’t really have to even answer these people’s accusations. EVERYONE knows that the Clintons lie, so OBAMA should use the time proven method of the Clintons when confronted with accusations. “I have done nothing wrong!” - with no blabbering explanation - and get right back on center and on message.

Good theory. I think Bill “thinks” he wants her to be Pres., and “thinks” he might somehow have another shot at power, but also knows exactly what you said, that she would do more than hurl ashtrays if he in any way compromised her coronation.

I concur. This is a designed strategy. Let Bill flame everyone while Hillary sits on her massive rump. This gives Hillary the opportunity to play the “female victim” card while, at the same time, letting Bill do her dirty work. Plus, everyone attacks Bill and not Hillary.

Very clever, but typical Clinton. Everything is a lie and misdirection.

With Hill as Prez and a Democratic Congress, watch for the Dems to change the two term limit.

My wife is convinced that Hill will pick Bill as VP. I disagree with her (because I read somewhere that it is illegal since if Hill passed away or stepped down, Bill would be President again, violating the law). I don’t know if this has been confirmed or not.

But Hill will likely pick Bill Richardson to consolidate the Hispanic vote. Or a Anglo male that is non-threatening (or an Asian Democrat to capture that demographiic).

The Anglos have worked hard to erase race as an issue in the county. Its too bad that the Latino and Black communities still cling to racial boundaries for the most part. Hence, this election will be about race pandoring.

This is why the Repubs are probably dead in this election.

Hillary can't pick Bill for two reasons--no one ineligible to be President can be elected VP, and they are both legal residents of New York, so the NY electors would not be able to vote for both of them in the electoral college.

The only way Bill could become President again would be if he was Speaker of the House and both the Presidency and Vice Presidency became vacant at the same time. I believe the House of Representatives is permitted to select as Speaker someone who isn't a member of the body, but I don't that has ever actually happened.

The Clinton tactics may briefly upset some of their usual supporters in the press, but we’ve been through this several times before, when the press was mad at Bill for a couple of weeks. They always get over it. Once she’s won the nomination they’ll be behind here almost 100% (all except the handful of Republicans in the media).

If the speaker of the House (or the president pro tempore of the Senate or a Cabinet member) is ineligible to be president, then the line of succession would skip to the person below him. For example, Henry Kissinger could not have succeeded to the presidency when he was secretary of state.

C’mon, Cap’n. Don’t fall for this.

“Defend” Bill? This is just another way to get media coverage of their story and keep it going.

Check out Dick Morris’ analysis of what the ‘Toons are up to in S.C. and it will all fall into place for you.

The ‘Toons know that the more he turns purple, and the more she stands by her man, the more votes they get. That’s just the way it is. So they get up every morning and say, “We can do that.”
