Back in March of 07 at the CPAC convention in DC several former Fred Thompson Congressional staffers told me Fred Thompson was thinking about a run. Some of his Tennessee cronies had been talking him up too.
I reported first that he was eyeing a White House bid. At the time several insiders told me OFF THE RECORD that it was largely a trial ballon to guage his popularity and float his name as a possible vice presidential nominee. I was sworn to silence.

Well, if you dress up in a tutu, at least take some pics. The election wouldn’t be a total loss. I understand, I’m taking it a loss less optimistically than I used to. Getting cynical.
I think I’m going to be vindictive. I expect Ron Paul to go third party, so I’ll follow him and vote against the GOP. They can bite me.
To this day, I regret wasting my vote on Bush Sr. I should have voted for Perot. I wont’ make that mistake again.
Given the choices, I could vote for Ron Paul as third party nominee, too.
More likely, I’ll spend the day in Mexico, sitting at a cantina on the beach, drinking Bohemia and watching the ocean.
Buy property in Costa Rica while you’re down there. The expat life is looking better and better...
To keep the RINOS out, number one. :) Also, RP matches up well with FRed in most areas. It seems the ones he doesn’t match up on are very important, such as the war and rebuilding the Military.
Hmmm, I was sent this chart...[my comments]
1. Fred and Ron believe in a strong national defense. [how strong]
2. Fred and Ron both would like to do something about Social Security and other entitlements before the overwhelming debt destroys us. They also agree on cutting wasteful government spending to help achieve this goal.[what’s RP’s plan]
3. Fred and Ron both would like to drastically reform the tax code and IRS.[what’s RP’splan]
4. Fred and Ron agree that a free market and consumer-driven approach to health care is better than socialized medicine run from Washington.[RP’s plan is similar to FRed’s]
5. Fred and Ron agree that a smaller federal government is needed.
6. Fred and Ron agree that states rights provided by the Constitution should not be ignored.
7. Fred and Ron agree that there should be no amnesty, in any form, for illegal immigrants.
8. Fred and Ron agree that the federal education system isnt working and parents should have more choice.
9. Fred and Ron agree that Supreme Court judges should follow the Constitution.
10. Fred and Ron agree on 2nd Amendment Rights to bear arms.
Ron Paul most closely matches Freds overall platform that promotes...
individual liberty
personal responsibility
free markets
limited government
Federalism (states rights)
protecting our country
American values
Rule of Law
OTOH, the guy that sent it to me can’t tell me specifics. I also have issues with RP having introduced over 300 pieces of legislation over his 20+years, but only something like 5 have been passed.
So, the question I ask myself is, will RP be less damaging than the “leftovers”? Because, I just can’t vote for any of them, under any circumstances.
But, then again, RP will never get elected anyway. LOL
Strange you should mention that.
Costa Rica is a very special place; literate and peaceful. I’ve spent some time in Costa Rica, both up in the highlands around San Jose, and along the Pacific coast, and I really like the area bordering the Golfo Dulce. I have looked into land in the area, and .... well who knows.
Well, maybe that speaks more of the sad state of DC mentality.
He made other statements later in the day, I think it was a response to a question. He said something along the lines of - Fred would be a great VP, would help me, I’d be honored, any Republican ticket would benefit, etc., etc.
I don’t recall him running nasty against Fred. In the debates, he was always respectful to him. There was a notable difference in how he treated Fred as compared to McCain Huck Paul and Rudy. If you have evidence of something else, please post it.
I don’t remember Romney running any negative ads about Thompson, or saying anything bad about Thompson in a press release, or attacking Fred Thompson’s record in the debates.
Do you have any links to any quotes by Romney that attack Fred Thompson?
There were attacks by Mitt Romney people here on the threads, but that hardly counts. And there were unsubstantiated claims of “people associated with Romney” being behind dirty tricks, but nothing shown to be from his campaign.
Evangelicals for Mitt spread nasty emails about Thompson in the spring. Warren Tompkins (sp?), who was on the Romney payroll, turned out to be behind the Phony Fred site. It’s been documented right here throughout the campaign ad nauseum. It appears to me to be Romney’s MO to keep his own hands clean and run a dirty campaign behind the scenes for plausible deniability — the very fact that he employs Tomkins is evidence enough of that for me. If you believe differently, great — I see no point in arguing about it since I no longer have any stake in the presidential race.
Let me clarify that I obviously have a stake in the direction of the country, which is why I will be fighting for as many down-ticket conservatives as possible. My point is that I am not a political relativist, so as none of the remaining candidates meet my threshhold for consideration, they do not earn my consideration. Moral relativism just results in a downward spiral, and political relativism has the same effect.
There are arguments for political relativism, so if that’s the way you choose to go I’m not going to slam you for it. We’re all going to do what we believe is best for the Republic. Freegards.
Hate to break it to you but she plays for the other team..........
I was unaware of this. Same think Huckabee is doing. When Mitt addresses FR or starts taking questions from the blogs, I suggest this point is raised. Obviously he’ll deny it and it’s hard to prove he was aware of it. He doesn’t strike me as the type, he’s openly got nasty with certain people, but who knows. That’s for informing me.
Evangelicals for Mitt was not associated with the Romney campaign. The man who did the phoney fred site was NOT on Romney’s payroll, and the site was denounced by Mitt Romney AND his campaign immediately.
Rudy was interviewed by Gibson today and said that many of them had taken pieces of Fred’s positions and employed them with their own. He said that Fred will play a very important role in any Republican administration. I think they all admire him greatly (with the exception of Huckabee).
Yeah,.. I could see him perhaps doing that... but I don’t think it’s likely.
I am glad to know many still remember WHO and WHAT he really is...
a CO-Abuser of the 1st amendment.
I was right...
YOU were wrong...
Go do unto yourself as you have suggested unto me.
= )
I believe it. Makes perfect sense.
