There was an article in the Financial Times this past weekend which made the rather cogent argument that socialist scandanavians didn’t fully realize that their “utopia of fairness” was predicated on a share cultural consensus. In other words, a homogeneous, non-Muslim society.

Sounds like the Japanese too. A small island country who protects their culture obessively in order to keep their national strength (as a "round eye", try being accepted in every day Japan as just one of the guys. It will never happen.)
