McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."

How about I’ve been on political forums TWICE as long as you. You act as if FR is the only conservative forum on the web. I mean there’s only about 10,000 of them or more.
And being UPSET doesn’t mean you sulk like a child or worse a freakin’ liberal. Suck it up and do the right thing.

I think that due to equal-time laws Fred couldn’t make a living as an actor as long as he was a declared Presidential candidate. That’s what delayed his entrance into the race, and that’s what caused his early exit.
Ronald Reagan was long retired from acting before he entered politics, but Fred is not retired, and he has those two little children to support.
Meanwhile, America will go down the proverbial drain ...

The only solace I find in this is at least I won’t have to see Fred lose to Hillary. I’m not saying he would have, as I believe he was our party’s best hope, but the Democrats do have an advantage this election cycle.
Now, I don’t have to care as deeply. Of course I’m nervous about Hillary, but I don’t have to invest so much of my heart into it. I imagine I’ll vote come November, but I won’t be volunteering or donating, so I’ll have my summer free at least :) And if the eventual GOP nominee loses, I won’t have to cry.
You and so many of the other FRedheads are wonderful people who place conservatism first and did a great job of supporting our candidate. It was clear from the beginning it would be an uphill battle and you never quit.
Had Huckabee run out of steam just a week sooner, I think Fred would have taken 2nd in SC and we’d have been in a very good position going into Super Tuesday, but it was not to be.
Thanks again for supporting our conservative. Such effort is never wasted.
It is insane and stupid for any self-respecting conservative to hand our troops over to CiC Clinton or Obama. By sitting out you also leave one of them to pick at least 2 SCOTUS nominees.
Honestly, people willing to sit home on election day and hold their breath until they turn blue make me more nervous then some of our remaining candidates do.
Sure we survived Carter and Clinton but not when we were I a war for our very lives. perhaps you, like the liberals believe this is a bumper sticker war. You further assume there will be something left after they are through with the nation in 8 years.

I've heard much of this "throwing in the towel" talk lately. The party has had many ups and down in the last 150 years. Lincoln's election then assassination. The rise of Teddy Roosevelt and the progressives followed by his desertion leading to the election of Woodrow Wilson. The roaring 20's with Calvin Coolidge followed by the proto New Dealer Herbert Hoover. Goldwaters nomination followed by a defeat to Johnson and the rise of the RINO Richard Nixon. We had eight good years with Reagan followed by "read my lips" Bush. We thought his son would be more conservative but alas his domestic agenda may be worse than Bill Clinton's (except for the Supreme Court Appointments).
It doesn't appear any good conservatives are left in the race this year. We lack leadership now but others will in the future step forward. The battles continue, I will fight to the last.
