BILOXI -- A 27-year-old teacher at Biloxi's alternative school was released on $50,000 bond after being charged with sexual battery of a teenage male student at the school, police said Monday.
The complaint against Rebecca Bogard of Woodland Park Drive, Biloxi, was filed by the student's parent, said Capt. John Miller of the Biloxi Police Department. She was arrested Friday by the Biloxi Police on one charge of sexual battery on a male under the age of 16 and taken to the Harrison County jail.
Judge Albert Fountain set her bail at $50,000, and she was released the same day.
"This is her first year to teach at the alternative school," said Biloxi School Superintendent Paul Tisdale. Bogard is a science teacher at the Center for New Opportunities on Pass Road; she previously taught at one of the district's elementary schools for about three years.
She is a 1998 graduate of Biloxi High School.
Tisdale said he has informed the school board of the charges against Bogard. He will meet with the board attorney and the district's personnel director today to determine what action should be taken.
I'm sure that some of them do. However, girls typically approach the encounter with a different set of expectations than do boys, and have different emotional effects afterwards.
I mean, how often do you hear of a poor young boy being pressured into sex by his girlfriend, versus the other way around? How many men do you know of who felt disappointment or shame after their first sexual encounter?
That's not to say these things never happen, but it is MUCH less frequent among men. And on those rare instances when a boy is reluctant to have sex, or feels disappointment after sex, it is almost always because of religious belief and not for any emotional reasons.
Boys and girls are different, and that difference is magnified when it comes to sex.
I will lean towards “not guilty” here.
(But reserve my right to alter my determination should additional photographic evidence surface.)

But seriously, what is with all these female teachers who have relations with their students (at least the student in this case was 16, not 12)? Are they stupid, crazy, or what? They have to know this sort of thing is a career-ender, nevermind the legal ramifications, don’t they?

your statement concerning Catholic priests is ignorant at best....the incidence of child molesting amoung protestant clergy outnumbers the Catholic total.....not even close.....scout leaders, teachers etc also outnumber Catholic clergy that heving been said, there is no excuse for any adult to molest a child, but a 17 year old boy having sex with a female teacher is not child abuse in my book, Monica was a 22 year old intern, subordinate to Billy boy, and no one suggested child abuse.

Perhaps. I guess there's really no way to know for sure how much "underreporting" there is.
Even still, I am confident that many more girls than boys are pressured into sex, and likewise many more girls are deeply affected by their first sexual encounter than are boys. That's not to say boys are no better than animals, nor that they are completely unaffected by sex. It's just that they are not as sexually vulnerable and are affected by sex differently than girls.
Or do you believe that all sexual differences are merely social constructions, and that when you get down to it men and women only differ in their plumbing?

I think both are statutory rape, but I don't believe both call for the same response. Certainly not in terms of outrage, and maybe not in terms of punishment either. It's kind of like mugging someone vs. embezzling from your company. In both cases you are taking something that isn't yours, and both deserve to be punished, but the two are just not equivalent.
The potential danger between the two scenarios is different. I agree that generally the law should hold men and women to the same standard, but sometimes it makes sense for the law to take into account our differences. For example, in cases of self-defense we often account for a woman's smaller stature, relative weakness, or inexperience with fighting.
