With popularity comes notoriety. Thats the lesson Ron Paul is learning as the nation observes Martin Luther King Day and the GOP presidential contender bears the burden of disparaging comments, made in a newsletter bearing his name, about the slain civil rights leader and the national holiday that honors him.

If we dissect the private lives of our leaders and discarded them for their flaws, we would shortly have no leaders at all. Good people can do bad things and still be worthy of honor. Wonderful insight. I thought common sense and humor had been wiped out of this once great site but this post makes me think there might be some life left in the old beast.
I think a careful, honest reading of Dr. Paul's writings or comments on MLK would reveal that he is consistent in praising Dr. King's virtues and in criticizing his flaws. This is not flip-floping. Its just dealing with the complexities of human behavior.
Could be other factors involved.
Nope, that is the way it was printed. I wasn’t meaning to shout. What has this to do with the truth of M. Savage. Incidently, people in the media and hollywood change names routinely. Would you want a name like Weiner?
Seems you have matured to the name-calling level of the left.
“If we dissect the private lives of our leaders and discarded them for their flaws, we would shortly have no leaders at all. Good people can do bad things and still be worthy of honor.”
And such is/was the rationalization of Clinton-freaks.
I guess you would track these forums more then I do. So the problem is not Free Republic after all then. It seems to be endemic across all the forums. Conservatism has been wounded by somethig.
Any idea what is is?

I think “moron constitutes a personal attack.
“It seems its been taken over by right-leaning Trotskyites and Theocons. Its a shame.”
Do you understand the concept of a shifting political spectrum? Some people just do not buy the marketing of moderates being classified by the left as whatever pejorative names they choose to call the opposition. Most people on this site are in fact, quite moderate.
That may not be the correct conclusion. The web is growing. There are millions of websites and tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands being added world-wide daily. The increasing number of websites make it appear that the older sites are losing hits, even if their actual stats are remaining relatively steady.
Sites like Alexa do not necessarily produce accurate results. They rely on tracking the users of their toolbar to collect their usage data and then generate the statistics by program. Could be conservatives don’t like the idea of being tracked so don’t use the Alexa toolbar and this makes conservative sites appear to be getting fewer hits. Also could be their statistics generating algorithm is incorrect.
Also, Alexa is now tracking hits world-wide which is diluting their domestic stats. For example, Alexa currently ranks Free Republic at 9,462 (world-wide) when we used to be consistently within the top 3,000 sites. But I notice they’ve added a section at the bottom of their report for ranking sites by country and we’re ranked in the top 1500 American sites.
Here’s their ranking for FR:
Freerepublic.com traffic rank in other countries:
United States........1,343
Canada.................9,801
United Kingdom...9,249
Philippines..........11,987
India...................15,515

If so, so does "race-baiter" and "race-baiting" which I've been called, and have called Admin Moderator attention to. The person's who used these terms are still around. I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.
Oh, and if you're so incensed by this, why didn't you ping Ad Mod? And why don't you and your buddies tone down the rhetoric? Hmmmmmmmm?
“Oh, and if you’re so incensed by this, why didn’t you ping Ad Mod?”
Past experience - not worth it. If I did, you’d call me a crybaby, anyway.
“And why don’t you and your buddies tone down the rhetoric? Hmmmmmmmm?”
I can only speak for myself. Though the only namecalling I see on this forum is from a small group of Paul haters that congregate on these threads.
If I do you’re welcome to call me on it.
YouTube
Those rankings are by percent. As the pie grows bigger your percent of it can diminish even if your absolute numbers stay the same or even increase.
I've already stated I've contacted Ad Mod when I've seen something egregious. Why would I call you a crybaby?
Though the only namecalling I see on this forum is from a small group of Paul haters that congregate on these threads.
Wrong. We've been accused of being liberals & socialists just because we disagree as to whom we support, we've been called Trotskyites & race-baiters, all kinds of names. No by you. But others with whom you sympathize. All this toward long time FReepers who's conservative credentials should not be in question. But these terms are used freely as ad hominem attacks instead of debating the issues.
So, if you're offended, sorry. But so are we. So if you want the name calling to stop, begin by cleaning up your own house (meant broadly).
So relative to all the new people coming on the net I guess we are still doing as well or better most other forums.
I can understand that.
Thanks for the clarification.
Are you saying that you can't tell the difference between a flawed-but-great man, and a weasel like Bill Clinton? By your reasoning, we should reject Thomas Jefferson as a leader. He was a deeply flawed man. And George Washington, too. And Ronald Reagan, and well, pretty much everyone, because all men are flawed. The one perfect man isn't running for office this year, so all we're left with is flawed humans.
The difference is that great men recognize their flaws and try to learn from them. Clinton is (as he shows every single day he shamefully shills for his unqualified harpy of a wife) that he was a mediocre president and remains a less-than-stellar person. Clinton does *not* admit to his mistakes (shamefully arguing over the definition of sex or the word "is").
I see a difference between Bill Clinton and Thomas Jefferson. Are you saying that you don't?
you get off on it.
does history and political thought end and begin with you over slavery?
are you as fixated on black or hispanic racism towards whites same as you are white racism?
i find that to be exponentially a greater threat to our culture than the occasional eccentric peckerwood you might dig up
but to be fair....i just don’t really give a flying eff about being all PC about minorities and this foolish obsession with racism...."egads, they dared question Dr King" or "Thaddeus Stevens was a hero"...we live in a fairy tale land where a known conservative talk show host like Sean Hannity sucks up to that creep Al Sharpton. This is the new conservatism, the guilty soft as putty, whites better know their place type that many youngbloods here exemplify. I'll pass, thanks.
it’s not an end all for me
folks should be judgedby how their behaviorand held to the same standards regardless of their color or religion
minorities should have to stand the same glare as whites
but they don’t....not from the media or from PC raised psuedoconservatives
