Fred Thompson's distant third in last night's South Carolina primary, has me re-thinking my support. I say this with disappointment, " I don't think Fred can win the nomination". Part of me wants to support him to the bitter end. Another part feels that in doing so I may only be helping McCain or Huckabee; my least 2 favorite candidates. I live in a Super Tuesday state, and my vote may actually matter this cycle, so I want to use it wisely. The only other candidates who seems like they can stop McCain or Huckabee is Romney or Rudy. If McCain wins in Florida, then he's in good shape to be the nominee. Polling analysis, done before Nevada and South Carolina primary; has him in the lead in Florida at around 23% about a 2 point lead over Rudy whose at 21-22%. Romney is around 18%, Hucakabee 15%, Fred 7%, and Paul 5%. Florida is a winner take all state, so whoever wins will have solid delegate count. Romney has the most delegate at this point, counts vary from source to source, but I put him at 72 to McCain's 38. So a win from Romney in Florida would give him a solid lead going into Super Tuesday. A win by Rudy would knock McCain into 3rd in the delegate count. So my quandry is do I continue to support Fred, or put my support behind a candidate who has a better chance of stopping McCain. In the end I will vote for the GOP nominee regardless. This is only because the troops are deployed, and they don't deserve a Commander-In-Chief from the party that tried to lose the war for them. So the primary is where my vote counts the most, and I want to put the "best man possible" for the job on the ticket. Unfortunately it dosen't look like the "best man" for the job will be at the top of that ticket, but there's is another spot on that ticket. Hey it might be wishful thinking, but what's a Fredhead to do??
And Huckabee only has about $ 600,000 to go on, and is running on fumes, if Fred can out last him for another few weeks, then Fred WILL get the votes he needs.... PLEASE DON”T GIVE UP FRED, and please DON”T GIVE UP ON FRED !!
Yeah but they weren’t attacking him for being liberal; they were attacking him for making what were probably smart business decisions—likely ones necessary to keep the company alive.

Except for the fact that Romney governed Massachusetts as a hardcore liberal, and only changed his tune when he wanted your vote.
Mitt instituted gay marriage, completely homosexualized the public schools, signed a permanent “assault” weapons ban, and pushed through socialized medicine complete with taxpayer-funded abortions, and a whole lot more.
Does a politicians actual record mean nothing anymore? Or, are lying words enough?

I voted for Bush the first time because he was deemed the acceptable solution. Another 2nd choice in my 30+ year voting history.
Same was for 2004 although Bush had abandoned much of the campaign platform. But he was strong on defense so I gave him another pass and he screwed up the conservative side of the GOP really badly. He fragmented the conservative cause and now we really have a mess on our hands.
There are few influential people left in the GOP that really care about conservatism. The ones who care are right wing evangelicals as defined by the MSM. And we know progressives dispise religous instruction because it points out that lying and cheating and stealing and adultry are wrong. Progressives don’t believe in taking responsibility for their actions. If they mandate the government to allow unacceptable behavior then progressives are absolved from any responsibility beyond eating and drinking too much.
Bush only carried those states because Kerry and Gore were worse. Just enough worse they lost by statistically slim margins. Bush has ignored the illegal immigration. Thanks to support from the McCains. Bush forgot all about fixing Social Security. Bush forgot about spending restraints and ballooned the defecit. Now Bush is going to give us a government bailout of our stinking economy because lenders and buyers acted irresponsibly and real jobs went overseas. And guaranteed there is no Presidential Candidate who is going to vote against Federal Charity. It’s the progressive thing to do since nobody is reponsible for bad judgement.
I like the electoral college. But that is soon going to be history as well. All we need is another progressive as President who can fulfill the wishes of the United Nobodys and trade away our superpower status to appease the poor and oppressed, irresponsible because they are choking on our greenhouse gas.
Frankly, this election sucks for America. I hope I am wrong. Get back with me a year from now.
I think one of the answer's to that is : We have to change our Caucus' and Primaries.
When you have "open" primaries, or "Republican" primaries, but DEMOCRATS can vote.....do you think only REAL HONEST people show up ? Or do you think they just might vote for the person who would be the least threat to "their" candidate ? ( And we would do the same if the situation is reversed )
This country has the screwiest laws with our choosing of a President that I have ever heard of.
Don't even get me started on ELECTORIAL COLLEGE or DELEGATES MEAN MORE THAN STATES WON. ! I would HATE to have to "teach" a LEGAL IMIGRANT" how we chose our candidates. argh!

I supported Keyes until he stated that he favored reparations for blacks while running for the Illinois Senate seat. That statement told me something about Keyes.
Let me know when the pool starts for when he comes out of the closet if elected - I'll take Memorial Day Weekend, 2009.

No. He didn’t. Reparations are payments from the Treasury to individuals. Alan has always opposed that.
What he was trying to do was to teach the black community in Chicago that government largesse was not the answer to their problems. In fact, it has been the source of most of their troubles, in the form of Great Society programs that destroyed their community, their families, and their economy.
He said that if actual damages could be proved, we should take a lesson from the Roman Empire and simply remove the tax burden from the affected community for a certain time to allow them to recover. He made the same comparison to the area affected by Katrina. Instead of flushing tens of billions of dollars down the toilet, and creating a whole dependent class, simply get government completely out of the way and watch the community prosper.
Sad to say, you’re a victim of pro-Obama media soundbite deception. Alan doesn’t talk in soundbites, he talks in-depth about the problems we face.

The actual record means a great deal. Without having studied it very hard, I figure, about half the stuff he did was bad. I think the fact that he had a liberal legislature may have a little bit to do with it, but still, he could have done a LOT better.
Comparing it to Obama - his stalwart opposition to babies born alive being given life support, for example, I still find Romney preferable. My point is, I don’t think of it as doing “evil.” I vote for the guy who is closest to my values. Not voting is a way of voting, too. I’d rather have abortions legal through 6 mos. than abortions legal up to and after a baby is born. That doesn’t mean I favor abortion under any circumstance.
I also am uncertain, on many of these issues, how much control Romney would have. The big deal is the appointment of justices. Would he appoint better judges than Obama or Clinton? I think so. I can’t possibly know, but I think so.
If McCain wins the nomination, he's going to face the general election without the support of many conservatives--of all stripes--whom he has actively stabbed in the back over the last eight years.
If Huckabee wins the nomination, he'll get some social conservative support, but will not get support from those who are concerned about immigration or fiscal policy.
If Giuliani wins the nomination, he probably won't get much support from any conservatives. He'll court the support of crossover Democrats, and may get some.
If Romney wins the nomination, he'll get the support of fiscal conservatives. I think he'd also get some support--albeit begrudging support--from RKBA and pro-life conservatives, since he's trying to position himself as significantly less evil than the Democrats. He might lose support from voters who can't stand Mormonism, however.
Fred Thompson does have some problems winning people over, but all of the other candidates have huge disadvantages of their own. I can see Mitt Romney managing to keep at least begrudging support of most conservatives, but any of the other candidates are going to lose a large part of the base. Will they make up for that loss of support with superior campaigning skills? Conceivable I guess, but I wouldn't bank on it.
IMHO, best case scenario would be for Romney to join with Thompson and use his campaign skills to get Thompson into the presidency with himself as VP. If he were to do that for Thompson, I think that would allay many of the fears people have about his conservatism, and would leave him well positioned for 2012.
Which mean you voted for Bob Dole, right?
