Fred Thompson's distant third in last night's South Carolina primary, has me re-thinking my support. I say this with disappointment, " I don't think Fred can win the nomination". Part of me wants to support him to the bitter end. Another part feels that in doing so I may only be helping McCain or Huckabee; my least 2 favorite candidates. I live in a Super Tuesday state, and my vote may actually matter this cycle, so I want to use it wisely. The only other candidates who seems like they can stop McCain or Huckabee is Romney or Rudy. If McCain wins in Florida, then he's in good shape to be the nominee. Polling analysis, done before Nevada and South Carolina primary; has him in the lead in Florida at around 23% about a 2 point lead over Rudy whose at 21-22%. Romney is around 18%, Hucakabee 15%, Fred 7%, and Paul 5%. Florida is a winner take all state, so whoever wins will have solid delegate count. Romney has the most delegate at this point, counts vary from source to source, but I put him at 72 to McCain's 38. So a win from Romney in Florida would give him a solid lead going into Super Tuesday. A win by Rudy would knock McCain into 3rd in the delegate count. So my quandry is do I continue to support Fred, or put my support behind a candidate who has a better chance of stopping McCain. In the end I will vote for the GOP nominee regardless. This is only because the troops are deployed, and they don't deserve a Commander-In-Chief from the party that tried to lose the war for them. So the primary is where my vote counts the most, and I want to put the "best man possible" for the job on the ticket. Unfortunately it dosen't look like the "best man" for the job will be at the top of that ticket, but there's is another spot on that ticket. Hey it might be wishful thinking, but what's a Fredhead to do??
And you’re going to do that with Alan Keyes?
The choice is clear: Mitt Romney
Defeating Romney would mean the next president will be Hillary or Obama, or possibly McCain. That’s a great plan to defeat liberals you have there, genius.
I know JimRob and most FReepers loathe Rudy, but to call him a flip flopper is ridiculous. I don’t agree with most of his beliefs, but I do respect him for not lying about them to us.
Huck is the opposite of this. I get the impression that he’ll say anything to anyone about his positions if it’ll further his chances at winning - which is why I trust him about as much as I trust the Clintons (which means not at all).
You actually think the South will vote for Hillary or Obama over Romney? What are you smoking?
I will vote for Fred on 2/5.
"Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair. The rest is in the hands of God." - George Washington
Our duty is not to win. That's up to God. Our job is to be faithful to raise the standard, and to give the people a choice. What they do with that choice is up to them.
You got me! Those two should be running as Democrats! Why Fred has gained no traction is beyond me.
Thank you. Ann is Hi-Larious.
Choosing the supposed lesser of two evils still leaves you in the hands of evil at the end of the day.
If that is the outcome, it will be the fault of people like you, not people like me.
I agree with you. If Fred continues he may be able to broker the GOP Convention and Party Platform to take a stand for TRUE Conservatives.
But I am still voting for him on Super Tuesday. That day will define exactly how divided or united the GOP really is.
As much as I would hate it for McKennedy to get it over Thompson, at least McKennedy may protect our gun rights and Rombomb will absolutely not. The 2nd amendment is at stake here. It is in the US Supreme Court right now and we need to ensure appointment of Constitutionalist judges. So I will be there to pull his level if he is who we have. I would much rather do it for him than a gun-grabbing socialist. And a vote not cast is one given to the Hildabest.
I don't know that he's a flip-flopper. But he is either a noob to the Conservative movement or he threw his core beliefs out the window while in office.
You named four liberals.
I'll vote third party or write-in.
I'm with you FRiend! Hucklebee is already waning & McCain ONLY won S. Carolina because the Independents voted for him. Think about it - it wasn't that many months ago that McCain's numbers were almost zero & everyone thought he was washed up - there's still hope for Fred & as long as he's willing to fight, I'm with him.
Fred's a real patriot & he will know when he is at the point where he can no longer compete. I trust his judgment & I'm not giving up the fight just yet!

Voting for the lesser of two evils gives you a chance that the lesser of two evils might prevail. By not voting, you are doing nothing to stop the greater evil from winning out.
Whether you label them or not, one of them is going to be the next president. Take your pick.
Until folks start simply voting for the best candidate instead of being led around by the nose by the media and the party gatekeepers, you’re going to keep getting snookered into lesser of two evil situations. Refuse to play their game and you’re halfway to defeating them. After all, they can’t win without the suckers.
