It's clear who Huckabee camp is blaming for its squeaker of a loss in South Carolina: Fred Thompson.
After Huckabee's gracious concession speech -- in which he had nothing but kind words for John McCain who he said showed great "civility" -- former SC Gov. David Beasley, a Huckabee surrogate, railed against Thompson.
"Fred hurt us in South Carolina," Beasley began. "He had one goal and one goal only -- to distort Mike Huckabee's record so John McCain could pull it out. No ifs, ands or buts about it...
"Thompson came here and just went to the areas where he could gut Huckabee. I have no doubt in my mind, it was Washington politics at its worst.
"One thing about Fred; I love Fred, but Fred's not stupd...I don't think he had any intention in South Carolina but to hurt Mike Huckab... Had Fred Thompson not been in the race, this would have been an overwhelming, dynamic victory for Mike Huckabee."

Huckabee is so annoying.
As a FRED supporter from the beginning, I would like to have you explain where you get this absurd assumption that A. FRED will come out for Mclame and B. that true conservatives would just blindly follow his endorsement of the Major RINO Mclame.
Sounds like more of same old SORELOSERMAN huckleberry BS.
Neither has the money to win the long battle.
It’s Romney. Thompson’s people will mostly go to Romney. The only thing that will stop that is McCain funding Thompson to stay in.
“...he will be the Republican equivalent of George McGovern. IMHO of course.”
Don’t be so humble when stating the TRUTH!
Rudy and McCain are peas in a pod as far as being liberal and unelectable.
Neither is an acceptable candidate!
Well said. I’ve tried not to despise huck, with the thought that I might have to try to vote for him in a general, but he’s so despicable, there’s just no way. I thought politicians are supposed to make themselves MORE likable, and to attract MORE voters?
They outted themselves.
Well Huck why haven’t you gone after McCain. Even in his speech he still compliments McCain. Hmmmmmm.
“Huckabee is so annoying.”
I like him. But his politics are a bit disturbing.
Poor, poor Hucka-wanna-bee.
A friend in Greenville SC told me last nite folks were turning against the slimey huckster at the last min. Word went via phones that “to stop the huckster, McCain was the way to vote” “A Fred vote was a wasted vote.”
Not sure of this and cant follow the logic but just passing on info.
Evangelicals were turning away from Huckster at the last min it appears. He will be gone soon and will remain just a bad joke.
Not sure what will happen with Thompson but it doesnt look good now.
Good point, it's like the rodeo clown Huckles took the focus off the issues, it turned into a religious war, and Romney came off smellin like a rose, mcCain and Julie got bucked right off and bit the dust
All three of you can go pound sand. I will NEVER vote for you, Mr. Huckabee. You are a worthless, disgusting POS socialist scumbag. I'm glad I supported Fred, if for no other reason than to see your worthless RINO ass spanked.
BTW, Mr. Rollins, RE your statement about kicking Mitt's teeth out: I hope to meet you in person someday so I can kick your teeth out. You're a worthless little puke who isn't fit to shine Senator Thompson's shoes. Hell, you aren't fit to clean his toilet.
FOAD you inbred losers.
Makes sense to me. Would explain Thompson's kid gloves approach with McCain, and the liberal-like hatred he has whipped up against Huckabee, McCain's greatest threat. I'm convinced that Thompson has only been staying in the race to run interference for McCain and his reward could very well be the second spot on the ticket in the fall. I don't know how else you explain a guy staying in as long as he has when he is clearly going nowhere.
Ha ha. Where were the black helicopters when Rush was claiming McCain and Huckabee were conspiring together to take votes away from Mitt, and all the dittoheads ate it up?
True dat.
Amusing how Thompson started the all-out attack on Huckabee, and when his opponent's supporters fought back, all we hear is whining about unfair play. I have no doubt this cost Thompson in more ways than one. He not only came across as surly, but the fact that he concentrated on one opponent and one opponent only gave the appearance that he was just picking a fight, like it was personal. He was bragging about being the most like Reagan, all the while not appearing like Reagan at all.
