FRED THOMPSON, IN OR OUT? (Mother in hospital)
PowerLine ^ | January 19, 2008

Posted on 01/19/2008 8:07:10 PM PST by restornu

Fred Thompson just spoke to his supporters in South Carolina, where he appears headed for a weak third or fourth place finish. Thompson thanked everyone and then spoke about America and conservatism's contribution to it. He did not talk about Florida or being in the race to stay.

Word is that Thompson will return to Tennessee to visit his mother in the hospital. While he's there, presumably, he'll consider his options. Frankly, and I say this with regret, it's difficult to see the case for him remaining in the race.

WIll do.

I have a theory so I want to run it by a couple of folks first.

The thing that people forget around here is the primaries are are just 1/2 the battle. The behind the scenes stuff is the other half. Despite the words of some that they no longer exists, the smoke filled rooms of yesterday are still around, they just have been replaced with catering and laptops, but the maneuvers are the same as the have been for 200+ years.

I have expected the GOP to be a little more surprised at McCain's rise than they have indicated. It is like they expected it. I also know the powers that be have no interest in taking him into the general, or at least need an escape plan.

Those close to McCain know the truth. You can’t tell me they ever expected him to have a shot at this. He can’t be the nominee and the powers that be within the party know it. How they will handle it is anyone’s guess, but if his support from the Dems voting as Republicans keeps him aloft, they will have to do something.

I agree- and frankly I’m questioning my judgment in light of what we’ve just witnessed in South Carolina. I say this because I’ve been entertaining tin-foil hat thoughts a LOT. I need someone to explain to me in a LOGICAL fashion how John McCain who was TOAST last summer- could now be where he is in this race. Likewise Huckabee.

I said on some other thread- McCain worries me- beyond his policies and record. He seems unstable- edgy- nervous- just OFF the beam.

Juan Williams was a complete and utter sleazebag this sunday when he did not mention the reason Thompson did not go to Florida. Then again what else from an NPR zombie.

Thompson did not an issue of this but he is doing what NORMAL people do outside the beltway, family comes first.

Then again when did ANYONE at NPR know anything about a NORMAL family.

“Is it possible that Fred out foxed the MSM tonight? All the networks covered his speech in anticipation of him dropping out. Instead, he gave the best speech of the season, all on live, prime time TV.
In a lot of the polling data I’ve been reading, Fred is consistently the second choice.
For the first time in months, the buzz is around Fred.
Could it be?”

Yes! I believe Fred out foxed the MSM who were salivating about him droping out. Why doesn’t the MSM talk about Rudy dropping out since he hasn’t won anythng yet? He is a RINO, that’s why. Watch Fred go on and take on McCain this week in the debate. The polls here in Florida will change quickly after Thursday’s debate! GO FRED!

What will changing your registration to Democrat solve? Problem we have is we don’t stand for the same things the libs on the left do so what is the reasoning with the idea of makeing this change..
We are all frustrated with the field of candidates this election season. I think many would go libertarian save for some of their extreme ideas too.
I don’t think GWB did himself or the party any good by always trying to take the “hight road” by his practice of going to a gunfight with a butter knife. After the first few indidents in his first term he should have just taken off the gloves.
As to Fred...let us hope his mom is not seriously ill and that she will recover her strength and he will stay in the race.

FRed is the only viable Reagan conservative in the field. Huckabee and Romney should drop out and give their support to FRed.

They won't do it because they want to be President much more than they want what is best for this country. They want to be KING not servant. Real conservatives let alone real men would put aside their desires for the good the nation. What we have in this election are selfcentered, egotist that want the power. They are willing to lie, pander, cheat, particpate in character assasination, and play the religion card to their best advantage. This is the ugliest Presidential campaign I have ever seen.

Fred Thompson is a gentleman admidst scallywags!

To ALL I just heard on Mark Levin that Fred's mother is gravely ill and the Media has not said a peep, most likely for fear of that Fred might get a bump out of this!

McCain has openly gone against the GOP by joining the Gang of Fourteen and in various other ways. Unless those in control of the RNC are actually enemies of the GOP (which is possible) I would think they wouldn't want McCain to take the nomination.

The “McCain issue” is a point of big concern for many in the GOP. Many but not all unfortunately...
