Results from Nevada Cauceses

Posted on 01/19/2008 4:21:23 PM PST by ProudFossil

Is it my imagination or did I ust see on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN that Ron Paul got more votes in the Nevada Caucus than Hillary? And that Romney got almost twice as many votes as the total vote count for all the Democrats combined? And this after all the flap about the casinos, disenfranchisement, and endless hours talking about the Democrats in Nevada on the MSM?

Do Democrats just not bother showing up to vote? There is a huge disparity and CNN at least is claiming that there are more enrolled Democrats than Republicans in the state.

The #'s are less for the 'rats because they are # of delegates won whereas the Republican #'s are actual votes cast in the caucus.

The 'rats had well over 100,000 participate in the Nev. caucus.

Imagine if everybody started a new thread every time they had a question about something.

Paul got ~6000 votes.

I understand that Hillary got more than half the Dem vote, which was over 100,000.

Nevada is a caucus state, not a primary election state so those aren’t actual votes that you’re seeing, those are the number of delegates selected to county party conventions and the Democrats and Republicans configure those delegates in different ways. To compute the actual number of caucus goers voting for each candidate, you have to know the total number of caucus goers for each party and then allocate Clinton 51% of the Democratic caucus goers and Ron Paul should be allocated 13% of the total number of Republican caucus goers.

I am not at all surprised by the number of votes Ron Paul received. My household received enough campaign literature by mail from his campaign over the past for or five months to fill a garbage can. Sometimes we received as many as 3 pieces a week. His radio and TV ads ran nonstop for months, and his homemade looking signs have been plastered all over Las Vegas since early Fall. His radio, TV, and literature made him appear to be very mainstream, not the Dennis Kucinich (whom he said he would have endorsed if he were not running) of the Republican Party. Ron Paul’s campaign clearly had a lot more money to spend than the other candidates.

By contrast, the others did very little campaigning in Nevada. We received a few pieces of literature on Mitt, maybe one on Huckabee, and none from the others. Despite my opinion of Ron Paul as being on the lunatic fringe of the political spectrum, I find it positively delicious that Paul received more votes than Hillary! Also, to put things in perspective, Fred Thompson received about 66% of the total number of votes that Hillary received and spent almost zilch for it.
