OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) - One week ago, a 10-year-old boy was accidentally shot in a botched gas station robbery. Doctors expect that Christopher Rodriguez will be permanently paralyzed from the waist, down.
State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oak., knows firsthand what it is like to be the victim of gun violence. He was carjacked in broad daylight last month. It was Rodriguez's shooting near Piedmont Avenue, however, that really shook that lawmaker. He is now leading an effort to make sure no other children are affected by gun violence on the streets of Oakland.
"There's sort of a despair setting in right now, I can feel it as I go around," described Perata. "And so this might be nothing more than a psychological effort to make those of us living in Oakland feel even better about that. But it's better to try to lower the odds somehow.
Perata is establishing a massive gun buyback program at three locations next month, offering $250.00 to anyone who brings in a gun. There will be no questions asked of anyone who brings in a gun.
Perata acknowledges that the concept of a gun buyback is not new. However, he hopes that offering a variety of drop-off locations emphasizes to Oakland residents that lawmakers are committed to getting guns off the streets. "In Oakland, there can't be a higher priority than public safety right now," emphasized Perata.
The gun buyback takes place on Saturday, February 9, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Guns are being accepted at Allen Temple Baptist Church, 8501 International Boulevard, Oakland; True Vine Ministries, 896 Isabella Street, Oakland; and Christian Cathedral, 2433 Coolidge Avenue, Oakland.
But, the law still says “p-ss on the victims” got that?
Well I wonder if you could make your own cheap homemade gun, think they would buy it back?
If not, how is the government buying them 'back?'
I think they meant "The Buying Stolen Junk Guns With Your Tax Money" program.
AGNTSA!
;^)
Raven 25ACP
Excellent. I've got quite a few guns for sale well under 250 (my cheapest one is 135). Anyone wanna make a profit :-)
This idiot in California will give me $250!
Actually it is perfect........for criminals.
Steal a bunch of guns get 250 each no questions asked.
Got a murder weapon or a gun used in a crime? Or maybe the gang just needs to get rid of some of their junk and move up.
Perata will help.
No questions asked.
Brilliant Perata. Just brilliant.
And we pay for it.
LOL!
You should be fined for buying such a POS.
Quality firearms only! A gun that will jam at the point of need is worse that no gun at all. When the time comes that you need to deliver lead to the target, you better have something that can do so. Or you die with the jammed POS in your hand.
Raven? You are joking. I KNOW you are cutting and pasting, because you didn’t buy it. No FReeper is that dumb.
Oh sure, if you want to chance it with the risks of selling a gun to an idiot.
I bought a Bryco .380 once out of curiosity. Fired about 250 rounds without a single malfunction. By the time it had fired about 400 it was just about useless. I don't know if that performance is typical; I probably fired a bit too fast and overheated the barrel.
I think they meant “The Buying Stolen Junk Guns With Your Tax Money” program.
Don’t waste your money buying that Savage .22 LR. Just about all gun shows I’ve ever been to has someone there selling Yugoslavian made pieces of junk. I’ve seen the Yugoslavian made M59’s sold for $70. No where in the article did it say that the gun buy back program has to be handguns only.
Just imagine the look on the idiot liberal’s faces when you show up with 10 rifles complete with fold out bayonets on them. They might praise you. Not only are you getting rid of guns off the street, but knives also!!!
No, really, I have one. It's even tackier than the one in the picture - it has these really cheesy wooden grips. I bought it when I just started buying guns, I wanted a .25. I think I paid $49 for it. I didn't know a thing.
A gun that will jam at the point of need is worse that no gun at all.
I figure the Raven has saved dozens of lives. How often to you read about a gang-banger trying to take a pop at someone - but the gun "misfires"? I figure it's a cheap .25 whenever that happens.
I’m here to help. Seriously. FReepmail me dude.

ITEM #: CIA-0026
These Polish Model 78 flare pistols are quite a find! All of them are in excellent condition and appear to be never used. Each one is marked with a serial number on the frame and barrel. Also marked on the barrel is the date "1984" and the Polish arsenal marking "(11)"
They appear to be very close copies of the famous H&K flare pistols, and in fact may be a licensed version.
We do not know how long these will last, if you collect flare pistols buy one now while we have them!
Remember Flare guns are not normally used as offensive or defensive weapons but for signaling purposes. Typical of Polish engineering, these flare guns are overbuilt to last a lifetime.
No FFL Required!
I recall a similar *buyback* scheme in Rhode Island in which Senator Patrick *Patches* Kennedy was involved. One wag showed up with a scoped bolt-action Italian Carcano carbine, and asked *how much for this one- no questions asked!*
Taking guns from law abiding citizens is just as stupid.
