OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) - One week ago, a 10-year-old boy was accidentally shot in a botched gas station robbery. Doctors expect that Christopher Rodriguez will be permanently paralyzed from the waist, down.
State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oak., knows firsthand what it is like to be the victim of gun violence. He was carjacked in broad daylight last month. It was Rodriguez's shooting near Piedmont Avenue, however, that really shook that lawmaker. He is now leading an effort to make sure no other children are affected by gun violence on the streets of Oakland.
"There's sort of a despair setting in right now, I can feel it as I go around," described Perata. "And so this might be nothing more than a psychological effort to make those of us living in Oakland feel even better about that. But it's better to try to lower the odds somehow.
Perata is establishing a massive gun buyback program at three locations next month, offering $250.00 to anyone who brings in a gun. There will be no questions asked of anyone who brings in a gun.
Perata acknowledges that the concept of a gun buyback is not new. However, he hopes that offering a variety of drop-off locations emphasizes to Oakland residents that lawmakers are committed to getting guns off the streets. "In Oakland, there can't be a higher priority than public safety right now," emphasized Perata.
The gun buyback takes place on Saturday, February 9, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Guns are being accepted at Allen Temple Baptist Church, 8501 International Boulevard, Oakland; True Vine Ministries, 896 Isabella Street, Oakland; and Christian Cathedral, 2433 Coolidge Avenue, Oakland.
So the solution to criminals using guns is to try to get law-abiding citizens to give theirs up?
Typical.
Holy profitable buyback batman.
Savage .22LR from Walmart for $115 X10 in Idaho pays for my trip to California and a small profit.
If Perata had had a gun, the state might be plus one SUV, and perhaps less one loser criminal.
Stimulus. This ought to help the sales of $50 guns.
Great idea! I bet you'll see a lot of gang member wannabees in WalMart the next few days doing just this.
Oh this is priceless! We’ve had several gun buy back events here in MA and I gutta tell ya,,,,THEY DON’T WORK. The last event the May-a was swapping guns for gift cards to Target,,,no questions asked.....here’s how it worked,,,guns were dropped off,,,,no questions asked, person was given a gift card, don’t remember how much, maybe $200 or so,,,,,said person would then turn around and sell said gift card, get the cash, and yes, I know you will find this hard to believe, BUT, said person would then turn around and buy MORE guns with the money he got from selling the gift card...........real genius our May-a is, the brilliant Thomas mumbles Mennino.
Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.
Perata actually maintains a CCW. As with most hypocrites, and being a cowardly elitist, he would deny lesser persons the very right to defend themselves that he reserves for himself and his ivory-towered peers. Being such a coward though, he probably pissed his pants rather than defend himself against a criminal aggressor.
Holy crap! Think of the better guns you can buy after turning a sweet profit on some junk!
10 firearms @ buyback of $250 each = $2,500.
Cost of 10 firearms plus sales tax = $1,200.
$1,300 buys one Glock 27, two extra magazines and a fair supply of ammo.
Thank You taxpayers of Oakland for my new CC firearm.
Hey, that’s a good one.
Let’s see if I can argue this from the liberal perspective: If less sober drivers owned cars, then they wouldn’t die on the roads and accident statistics would decrease. Therefore, making it more difficult for sober drivers to get cars is the correct answer to the problem.
Only problem with the idea in California, You have a waiting period for al firearms. Maybe they can give us a heads up next time
You can make money faster with the Texas car buy back program. Up to $3000 to help buy an up to 3 year old car.
Uh, where did he get the funding?
Disarm the sheep and then blindfold them, especially when wolves are about. Talk about twisted logic. In nature this kind of thinking would result in placing you at the bottom of the food chain.
those of us living in Oakland feel even better about that.
