Why Rush Limbaugh Doesn't Like Duncan Hunter

I was surprised to hear Rush Limbaugh the other day say that there was no 'Thoroughbred' Conservative in the 2008 Republican nomination Field for President. I was thinking to myself, What? Rep. Duncan Hunter is Conservative right down the line. From his web site: Hunter' Ratings

Exactly how Conservative can you get? Ok, so what's with Limbaugh? Simple, found this On the Hill article that says:

"When they wanted him to vote for a pending trade bill last year, Hunter (R-Calif.) refused — again and again. And when the Bush administration tried to convince the powerful Armed Services Committee on its controversial port security plan, Hunter refused to budge."

"Twisting Hunter’s arm is impossible, his close friends say."

The article continues:

"And Hunter, whom many call a protectionist, was instrumental in scuttling a deal that would have given the operations at six major U.S. ports to Dubai Ports World, a company owned by the United Arab Emirates."

“He was shocked that the administration approved the deal,” said Rep. Jim Saxton (R-N.J.), a senior member of Hunter’s committee and a close friend. Saxton worked with Hunter to introduce legislation blocking the deal and revising the foreign-investment process to ensure national security.

“On the Dubai issue, he got all fired up,” a congressional source said. Hunter gathered information to prove that Dubai has not been trustworthy — despite repeated administration assertions that the UAE is a vital ally in the war on terrorism."

"It is not often that a guest on a TV news program has the boldness to put the interviewer’s political-activism past in the open, but Hunter wasn’t one to shy away. He made sure to point out, three times, that George Stephanopoulos, the host of ABC’s “This Week,” had worked for President Clinton, who supported the Dubai Ports deal."

“I don’t think President Clinton, your old boss, knows the facts of the transshipment that take place through Dubai sending nuclear components to all parts of the world,” Hunter told Stephanopoulos, in one of the references to Clinton."

I remember Rush getting particularly getting bent out of shape on the issue:

Rush probably felt he could personally change every American's mind on the issue from behind the EIB Golden Microphone, but alas, the deal fell through. Is El Rushbo taking out his frustration on the actual 'Thoroughbred Conservative' Republican Candidate for POTUS in 2008?

Got anyone else who is as socially conservative as Hunter with better tax policy scores? Calling Hunter a liberal is flamebait material. Free Republic doesn’t need RINOs like you. This is a social conservative website, not a republican one.

The fact that you go out of your way to try to push down a conservative candidate on this conservative website says a lot about the state of conservatism today.

It also says a lot about how much the state of Socialism has infiltrated the Republican party.

Not only is the GOP in danger, this country is in peril.

Absolutely, and yet there are still voters who are not blind but refuse to see. They neglect to see for one thing, that the GOP listened on the illegal immigration bill, when calls were made to stop it. Conservatives came out of the woodwork against it, even shut the phone systems in WA down. The message they will get from this primary, when the strongest forces for securing our border are shut out, is they shouldn't have taken that opposition seriously, and "we" didn't really mean it. If we had been as adamant as all those calls appeared to be, we would be supporting Hunter almost unanimously! NOT a good message to send the GOP.

As Ann Coulter wrote in her new book, the best-qualified of all the candidates is Rep. Duncan Hunter. During the debate he was the candidate who provided the best information about the economy and had a first-rate suggestion of what we need to do.

He keyed in on what must be one of the most important economic issues – trade.

He talked about our shocking $800 billion trade deficit, and what the Chinese are doing to us. Duncan understands that when anybody cites Ronald Reagan as a free-trade advocate in defense of our present trade policies, they need to remember that in my dad's playbook, protection of the American people came before anything else.

Take the case of Harley-Davidson. My father protected this American manufacturer of motorcycles against lower-priced Japanese imports. When he acted in behalf of an American company, Kawasaki and Honda reacted by moving their plants to the U.S. and created American jobs for American workers.

His policy was so successful that although he gave five years of protective tariffs to Harley-Davison, they didn’t even need that long a time before they could turn their company around. Given a level playing field they proved their superiority as an American manufacturer.

Ronald Reagan did the same thing with semiconductors, and the auto and steel industries. He also forced the Japanese and others to open up their markets to American products so that trade would be fair. When that didn’t happen he would impose tariffs on those products coming into the U.S., thus protecting American manufacturers.

Sure, he was a free trader who wanted too open up trade, but he always sought first to protect the sovereignty of the United States and its manufacturing base. He did not confuse free trade with giving the store away.

That’s what I don’t get. I thought Tancredo, Brownback, and T Thompson were completely irrelevant, and I never logged onto any of their threads (as far as I know). Yet we see day after day the same sort of comment like this from Freepers. Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

Your mileage obviously varies, but I feel free to visit and comment on any thread that sparks my interest.

The only exception to that is in the Religion Forum, where the official policy is that some threads are "protected." If I have a contrary view on such a thread, I'll keep it to myself.

If you apply and get protected status for Hunter threads, I'll observe the rules.

It's a strange day when a conservative website can't debate various candidates during the early primary season, but that's what you and many would prefer.

I see people on this thread saying that they are glad that Duncan Hunter doesn't seem to be able to gain traction.

I guess their motto is give us a Liberal (AKA - DEMONcRAT) or give us a RINO (AKA - liberal Republican't).

It's so sad that conservatives won't support a conservative.

I have to disagree. Free trade is freedom. It’s your ability and mine to buy what the world has to offer, and to sell our product worldwide. Free trade advances our standard of living. This has been understood by economists since Adam Smith. Stop free trade, as we did with the Smoot-Hawley tariff, and you have another depression.

That doesn’t mean that everything is hunky dory. Hunter makes a good point that we need machine shops and other domestic industrial skills for national defense. The arsenal of democracy won't count for much after we sell of the arsenal equipment and lose the skill to operate it.

Also, our industry may be unfairly hampered by US tax policy. When an American company builds a car in the US, it is hit with too many taxes. These taxes increase the cost to the consumer and help to make American built goods noncompetitive on the international scene. The problem here is not freedom or free trade. The problem is government, once again.
