At the Last Minute, Thompson Shines
National Review Online ^ | 19 January 2008 | Byron York

Greenville, South Carolina — At various times during Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign, there have been moments in which Republicans who admire Thompson and want him to succeed have said, “Yessssss! Yessssss! Why haven’t we seen more of that?” One such moment happened in December, after Thompson’s “no hand shows” performance at the Des Moines Register debate in Iowa. Another came nine days ago after Thompson’s forceful performance at the Fox News debate in Myrtle Beach. And there was another last night, in the final appearance of Thompson’s South Carolina primary campaign, in a packed room at Greenville’s Embassy Suites hotel. At that appearance, Thompson was so good, so energized, so non-laid-back-Fred, that many of his supporters wondered where the man had been during the campaign.

... “We’re having a little discussion in the party nowadays about what that means for the future,” Thompson told the crowd. “Some people think we need to get away from the Reagan coalition, because it doesn’t exist any more.” The audience erupted into boos. “Some people seem to think that we need to be a little bit more what they called progressive…Well, I reject that concept with every fiber of my being.”

... Thompson spoke without notes, and with obvious feeling. He so clearly believed what he was saying that he made an emotional connection with the crowd, and they responded with enormous enthusiasm. To everyone in the audience, Friday night in Greenville was what the Thompson campaign was supposed to be about. What made it particularly compelling was that it followed one of those quirky appearances that have come to represent what the Thompson campaign became. Three hours before the Embassy Suites speech, Thompson’s bus pulled up in front of the Westin Poinsett hotel on Main Street in Greenville, where Thompson emerged to…wander around.

Sadly, Fred’s candidacy was doomed the day after he announced, when I gave him $500. I have a long history of supporting primary losers, starting with Phil Gramm in 1996. Apparently, receiving a contribution from me is the kiss of death. Perhaps I ought to send some money Hillary’s way?

I am a Fredhead, and have a pretty hefty IQ--certainly not genius but way above average. Must be the intelligence quotient, fellow Fredheads. Smart enough to see through the smarmy manipulatiions of the media to the conservative truths.

They peaked too soon, Fred is hitting his stride NOW. When it counts. The more people looked at the others early, the sooner they were dismissed, example..Rudy. He's done.

That's a VERY good point!

No matter- you STILL didn’t waste your money- and you may be pleasantly surprised. As has been pointed out- others have or are peaking- Fred’s just getting in his groove...

Chin up!

Why pound McCain when he is so good at pounding himself. He is already starting to crack. Attack him too hard and you keep him engaged and you look like a dirtbag for running down a war hero. Ignore him and he goes nuts. Its a strategic twofer.

McCain will be gone on his owm steam soon enough...

It (Fred’s commitment and passion) was there six months ago. Earlier than that, way before he declared, I fell in love with Fred as a candidate. However, I admitted I didn’t know too much about the man, and would be “waiting for him to disappoint me.” He never did. I may be the only person in L.A. driving around with a Fred Thompson bumpersticker. He convinced me thoroughly that he is the best guy to be our President in ‘08.

Rudy has not even started yet.
His entire strategy starts off with Florida. - Risky, but daring.

From what I see here in Florida, many freepers may be shocked on January 30th.

Rudy looks to be very strong here. 1st place.
And I am voting for Fred!

>I have to wonder if the song writer ever saw the movie the original was written for?

They probably never even heard of it.
A shame about Anne Bancroft.

She was great in “Malice,” as well.

Oh, have no fears on that score. Win or lose, I never consider money contributed in support of a good cause wasted.

“The RealClearPolitics average of polls in South Carolina has Thompson virtually tied with Mitt Romney for third place, well behind John McCain and Mike Huckabee.”

The only problem with the RCP average is that they do not take into consideration last minute leanings or surges. It is clear that Fred has some momentum. Don’t know how much, but it is there. My read is that there were still lots of people who had not fully made up their minds. I am confident that he will do well enough to “buy a ticket” to FL and beyond, but only time will tell.

A little glimmer of media light from SC? - http://newsradioword.com/topic/listener_club.php?lcPage=login

WORD-AM has an online poll

Who will you vote for in the GOP Primary?:
Rudy Giuliani - 1%
Mike Huckabee - 13%
Duncan Hunter - 1%
John McCain - 1%
Ron Paul - 36%
Mitt Romney - 9%
Fred Thompson - 40%

Aside from the RoboPaul spamming, it looks like WORD-AM listeners like Fred, which gives some hope that informed voters in the population-rich uplands will turn out heavily for Fred.

Interestingly most FredHeads say the same thing and express bewilderment that others can not clearly see Fred is the obvious (and ONLY) choice from the candidates.

No. No, it doesn't.

Perhaps they do. Or perhaps they don't. But it doesn't look like it, either way. Online polls are completely, utterly, entirely meaningless. Polling has reliability (well, what reliability it has) because of certain mathematical properties of sampled populations. None of those properties exist in self-selected samples. There is absolutely no statistically-valid conclusion you can draw from an internet poll, other than that the specific people who chose to vote in that specific poll probably have the preferences they stated.

Go Fred. Seriously. I think he's far and away the best of the bunch, I've given him money, and if he stays in the race I'll give him more. But I take neither solace nor despair from this online poll; I give it exactly as much credence as I'd give an astrologer's forecast.
