At the Last Minute, Thompson Shines
National Review Online ^ | 19 January 2008 | Byron York

Greenville, South Carolina — At various times during Fred Thompson’s presidential campaign, there have been moments in which Republicans who admire Thompson and want him to succeed have said, “Yessssss! Yessssss! Why haven’t we seen more of that?” One such moment happened in December, after Thompson’s “no hand shows” performance at the Des Moines Register debate in Iowa. Another came nine days ago after Thompson’s forceful performance at the Fox News debate in Myrtle Beach. And there was another last night, in the final appearance of Thompson’s South Carolina primary campaign, in a packed room at Greenville’s Embassy Suites hotel. At that appearance, Thompson was so good, so energized, so non-laid-back-Fred, that many of his supporters wondered where the man had been during the campaign.

... “We’re having a little discussion in the party nowadays about what that means for the future,” Thompson told the crowd. “Some people think we need to get away from the Reagan coalition, because it doesn’t exist any more.” The audience erupted into boos. “Some people seem to think that we need to be a little bit more what they called progressive…Well, I reject that concept with every fiber of my being.”

... Thompson spoke without notes, and with obvious feeling. He so clearly believed what he was saying that he made an emotional connection with the crowd, and they responded with enormous enthusiasm. To everyone in the audience, Friday night in Greenville was what the Thompson campaign was supposed to be about. What made it particularly compelling was that it followed one of those quirky appearances that have come to represent what the Thompson campaign became. Three hours before the Embassy Suites speech, Thompson’s bus pulled up in front of the Westin Poinsett hotel on Main Street in Greenville, where Thompson emerged to…wander around.

At the last minute?

All the others, Mitt, Rudy, Mac, et al have been at this for a YEAR....and it's the last minute?

They peaked too soon, Fred is hitting his stride NOW. When it counts.

The more people looked at the others early, the sooner they were dismissed, example..Rudy. He's done.

The RealClearPolitics average of polls in South Carolina has Thompson virtually tied with Mitt Romney for third place, well behind John McCain and Mike Huckabee.

Pity. Fred should have done better in SC.

Which of course led to the inevitable observation, made by a woman standing next to me near the podium, “Where was this six months ago?”

Six months ago doesn't matter. Today doesn't matter.
November matters.

People are so dim-witted as to have been herded into accepting push polls, pull polls and other manipulative campaigning techniques that the substance gets mixed up with the BS.

The medium is not the message; at least not among the informed and those who have clear goals and basic principles within which to frame those goals.

I hope I get a few poll phone calls this year. I look forward to them every major election because I lie every time. As thoroughly and as convincingly as I can.

I catch snippets of Hillary's usual say-nothing rhetoric and feel sick. I marvel at the tapdancing and doubletalk of most candidates as they cater to the lowest common denominator. If you can't vote for a candidate without experiencing the Bullshit* I wish you would just stay home!

Most candidates have a sufficiently long record defining themselves and which establish a basis on which to accept or reject him. If he doesn't, he's being delusional.

*BULLSHIT

Fred/Hunter or Hunter/Fred would be my dream ticket. Hopefully we will have both in a new Conservative Administration!

See post # 17 :)

I surely hope that we learn from this absurd primary season- it’s utterly ridiculous for candidates and the electorate to go through this- all at the direction of the damned media.

Just saying that Byron is purported to be a "professional" yet he is only now catching on to what the original FredHeads knew almost a year ago.

For example, me.

I took a look at the candidates, the issues, voting history and backgrounds and proposed a Thompson-Hunter in MARCH, 2007. Now, 65% or more of this website support a Thompson Hunter ticket.

But hey, I am not a professional outfit like National Review that should be able to call a shot like that, I’m just another FredHead like you I suppose.

Strategy. At the MOMENT- Huckabee is Fred’s competition. Knock Huckabee down a peg or two and the race changes. Fred has gone after McCain, by the way, on conservative principles, illegal immigration and tax cuts.

If THomson could bottle his wit he would be rich. Unfortunately, he’s spotty and irregular - sorta menopausal in his rhetoric.

I tried to listen to Fred last night on Mark Levin’s show, but every other word was “uh” and I could not bear it.

You’d think a professional actor would know better!

My only real worry is that in my precinct, the polling place is in a rather large Baptist Church.

Was there a subliminal, white cross behind the ballot box? ;-)

"Here’s to you, Mister Huckabee, Jesus loves you more than will know. Whoa, whoa, whoa. God bless you please, Mister Huckabee, the White House holds a place for those who pray. Hey, hey, hey.”

Anyone need more reasons NOT to vote for Huckster?

(I have to wonder if the song writer ever saw the movie the original was written for?)

It’s embarrassing. I detest politics that divide and use voters.

I like Fred either way.

Me too. However, Fred ripping libs and RINO's new ones is more fun.

As the saying goes...from your lips, to God’s ears:)

I can’t believe the voters of SC will let the media tell them who to vote for...
