Pediatrician loses his medical license over gun charges

A Toms River pediatrician under investigation for firing a gun in his office surrendered his license to practice medicine while authorities yesterday detailed the serious allegations against him. At its regularly scheduled meeting yesterday in Trenton, the state Board of Medical Examiners approved a consent agreement with Jose Romillo to take his license pending the outcome of the investigation, said Larry DeMarzo, acting director of the state Division of Consumer Affairs.

Romillo, who obtained his medical license in 1976, was charged Dec. 31 with firing a handgun sometime in October. From that investigation, state and Ocean County health officials determined Romillo may have administered expired vaccine to at least two patients. In addition to the handgun charge, DeMarzo outlined allegations of serious abuses and misrepresentations to patients provided by two of Romillo's employees.

DeMarzo said Romillo carried a loaded handgun in his Fischer Boulevard medical office during working hours and apparently fired it numerous times there. Jeffrey Lamm, spokesman for the state Division of Consumer Affairs, which oversees the state Board of Medical Examiners, said Romillo did not fire at employees, but the weapon discharges were evident by bullet holes in a wall.

Romillo also is accused of injecting a patient with an empty syringe that should have contained vaccine. The doctor allegedly brought to his office and drank alcoholic beverages and treated patients while under the influence. He also did not perform tests for strep throat on patients but told their parents or guardians that he did, DeMarzo said. Romillo also is accused of improperly disposing medical waste. "The alleged actions of Dr. Romillo violated the trust of his patients and the professional standards that govern the conduct of physicians," DeMarzo said. "We cannot allow him to continue to practice medicine in light of these allegations."

yea, he’s messed up big time and should be treating patients. I’m surprised it took so long.

Yes, but it's important to highlight only the firearms aspect of the case in the headline.

Sounds like they should’ve suspended his license pending investigations into probable medical malpractice prior to this.

Did he shoot a “V.R.” in his office wall like Sherlock Holmes did once when he got coked to the gills on his seven percent solution?

This guy is not losing his license over a discharged gun. He is losing his license because he has been behaving eratically and even criminally. If half of what is reported is true, he deserves to lose his medical license, and the discharging of his weapon would be only one of many reasons.

The guy needs to seek medical help of his own.

True, the false vaccinations, lying to patients and medical malpractice are trivial compared to the fact that a pediatrician had a loaded gun.

I can see the 1945 MSM headline, "Hitler Loses War Over Gun Charges".

Exactly what is the gun charge anyway? Discharge of a firearm within the city limits maybe? And why didn't he lose his license over the medical issues, which would seem more pertinent?

I'm so confused. :)

Oh, I see it's Toms River New Jersey

Never mind.

Well he should at least be evaluated, even though I dislike ever having to say that.
