Thompson Rises to Third in SC Poll
Boston.com ^ | 17 January, 2008 | Foon Rhee

Fred Thompson, making what could be his last stand in South Carolina, has inched up to third in the latest tracking poll leading up to Saturday's first-in-the-South primary. Thompson has 14 percent in the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released this morning, sliding ahead of Mitt Romney, who slipped to 12 percent, even though some of the polling was done after he won the Michigan primary on Tuesday. Romney is chasing delegates in Nevada, whose caucuses are also Saturday, after saying he believes John McCain has South Carolina locked up. McCain held his lead in the new poll, with 29 percent, compared to 22 percent for Mike Huckabee. Ron Paul and Rudy Giuliani were tied at 5 percent, according to the poll. A Clemson University poll also gave McCain a 29 percent-22 percent edge over Huckabee, who won the leadoff caucuses in Iowa but hasn't finished better than third since. Thompson, the former US senator from Tennessee, plans to air a 60-second ad during today's evening news across South Carolina in which he talks up his conservative credentials in a folksy way designed to appeal to Southern voters. "I've been a conservative all my life," he says, then citing his "100 percent pro-life" record and asserting that Americans' fundamental rights come "from God, not government." McCain, meanwhile, picked up the endorsement today of the Charleston Post and Courier, which also endorsed him in 2000, when he lost to now-President Bush. The newspaper's editorial board said McCain's record in the eight years since only reinforced its belief that the Arizona senator is the best suited for the presidency.

Get real!

Hunter doesn’t have a chance in a brokered outcome. He hasn’t won anything and barely shows up in ANY POLL! Hunter won’t be rewarded for that. Instead the lying Huckster may get something out of it. The top three are MItt, McPain and the Huckabilly.

A second or even third place finish won’t be reason enough to call it quits. Hypothetically, if McLame wins that gives him only 2 wins and if Rudy Judy wins Florida, it’s still pretty much wide open as I see it.

"Where are all the ‘we’ll return the favor for Fred’ Romney people now?"

Never gonna happen , Mittflop and his Mittbots are only in it for themselves ... They have a RINO agenda to assert and nothing will stop them ...

Voters want an energetic, optimistic leader whose ideas come closest to their own. Or they’ll take an energetic leader whose ideas are at least acceptable. I don’t think they’ll take a tired old basset hound even though he’s part of the family. They instinctively know the energy just isn’t there. Fred might do O.K in S.C., but on Super-Tuesday - he’ll be swamped.

Thats the whole thing in a nutshell. “Money”. Fred needs a good finish to keep the money train comming in and conduct a credible campaign. I don’t know if a distant third will be good enough. I see him in the battle to at least Super Tuesday. No reason not to keep going until then.

Not. Even. Close.

No way Huck or McCain come out of a brokered convention.

Fred has to get WHITE HOT and win South Carolina other wise he will have to end his run. You cannot win the nominee with how he is performing in the polls and vote. It becomes pointless.

Forget Reagan. He can’t be cloned. He put Republican ideology into action. Reagan was a LEADER. What we need is a LEADER that can run on Republican ideology. I love Reagan too - but we need a LEADER that can get the people fired up to vote him into office.

I hope you’re right. I just fear he is going to get a lot of momentum in Florida after a South Carolina win.
