U.S. Carrier Kitty Hawk was in 28-hour Standoff with Chinese Submarine

Tense battle-ready standoff in Taiwan Strait

(Hong Kong=Yonhap News) Chung Juho = U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk (and its battle group) had 28-hour battle-ready standoff with a Chinese submarine and a missile destroyer in Taiwan Strait last November, it has been revealed.

This was the first military standoff between U.S. and China since the Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996.

According to Jan. 16 dispatch by China Times in Taiwan, on Nov. 23 last year, Kitty Hawk battle group was en route to Japan after China refused its port call in Hong Kong, entering Taiwan Strait instead of using its normal route. China immediately dispatched a Song-class submarine which happened to be in the neighborhood, and had it track the battle group.

China also sent a missile destroyer Shenzhen from its Southern Fleet which was readying itself in Hainan Island for the (upcoming) visit to Japan, joining the Kitty Hawk watch.

The battle group with the carrier and its eight escort ships were sailing northward at an even distance away (from China and Taiwan,) and the Chinese submarine and the destroyer were following and watching the battle group from the western side along the Chinese mainland.

Carrier Kitty Hawk was alerted by a P3-C anti-submarine plane from U.S. forces in Japan that a Chinese submarine and its destroyer were following them. The group stopped sailing and went into battle-ready mode, sending out warplanes to protect the fleet.

After tense 28-hour standoff, the battle group was able to return to Yokosuka base in Japan only in Nov. 24.

According to an U.S. military source, the Chinese submarine sneaked into Taiwan Strait from west after taking a detour around Taiwan's southern shore from east, in an effort to monitor Kitty Hawk battle group. S-2T anti-submarine plane from Taiwanese navy was conducting the regular patrol in the area, but was not able to detect the submarine.

You need a TS clearance to even get in the aircraft.

Maybe....but you could tour the A/C on the ground with permission from the CO. No cameras, of course.

But if you wanted to fly on a mission, you'd need a TS CW/ cryptologic/cryptographic clearance. Top Secret clearance wouldn't cut it.

Why do the Chi-coms dislike the Kittyhawk so much?? Isn’t that the ship they blocked from port in Hong Kong?

Does “kittyhawk” have some negative meaning in Chinese??

I hope not. My son is aboard the Kitty Hawk.

Amen. China and Russia are NOT our friends and they will one day turn on us, together or separately.

Right, they are behaving for the Olympics, then all hell starts to break loose.

They aborted so may girl babies the last two decades that there are mostly boys now becoming men.
I would think they would have to either become homosexuals fast or China would have to focus their aggression on matters of war (which would also reduce their population).

Of course the fact they seemed to have poisoned almost half their drinking water means they have no reason to leave and look elsewhere for more... NOT!

Kittyhawk is the longest forward deployed US carrier in area. It’s been in their face for a long time....causing them to lose face.

I actually used to think that WWI could have been avoided, but the more I read on it, the more I realized that it really was all about Germany going insane. The book that clinched it for me was King, Kaiser, Tsar. There were things that could have changed inside the German court, but once Wilhelm was surrounded by Anglophobe syncophants, everything England, France and Russia did to promote peace only caught his attention briefly and every perceived personal slight became huge.

So yeah, I think that if they are seeing it as WWI, they should be seeing it as something that needs to be checked early. Our one ray of light is that there are probably people much saner then Kaiser Bill in charge over there, and they have a lot of wealth that will be flushed down the toilet if they make war on us.

We need a bigger military, and especially we need the Air Force to have newer aircraft. the F-22 isn’t being bought in large enough numbers, and the F-35 is still a ways off.

We also need to get a new tanker yesterday. The reason the average age of tankers in the figures you posted is 44 years is because the KC-10s are facotred in. Most of the fleet is KC-135s, and the last ones delivered are already 44. The oldest ones will turn 53 this year.

That movie sucked. Especially when you consider how talented Widmark and Poitier were.

Were you asked to comment on my tag line?....I didn’t think so.

Don't put something under every post unless you're willing for it to be commented on, and willing to staand by it.

Man, sometimes I feel like Oscar LeRoy got himself about 200 FR accounts.

Iranian gunboats harassing US navy carriers in the Persian Gulf, Russian planes probing our borders/air defenses, and now this. Something big is in the works.

More likely they just think we're bogged down in Iraq and don't have the stuff to stand up to them. We'll see if they're so bold when we're out of there.
