Joint Chiefs chairman: close Guantanamo

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - The chief of the U.S. military said Sunday he favors closing the prison here as soon as possible because he believes negative publicity worldwide about treatment of terrorist suspects has been "pretty damaging" to the image of the United States.

"I'd like to see it shut down," Adm. Mike Mullen said in an interview with three reporters who toured the detention center with him on his first visit since becoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last October.

Bush had a great Chief of Staff, Peter Pace, but he bowed to the Democrats and retired him for doing his job and speaking his mind.

Then he put in Mike Mullen, a timeserver, to further please the Democrats.

Now we see what appeasing the Democrats inevitably leads to.

“He’s not a field commander.”

He was, for a long time.

As a junior officer, he served in various leadership positions aboard USS Collett (DD-730), USS Blandy (DD-943), USS Fox (CG-33) and USS Sterrett (CG-31). He has commanded three ships: the gasoline tanker USS Noxubee (AOG-56), the guided missile destroyer USS Goldsborough (DDG-20), and the guided missile cruiser USS Yorktown (CG-48); and has also commanded Cruiser-Destroyer Group Two and the George Washington Battle Group. Mullen’s last command at sea was as Commander, U.S. Second Fleet/Commander, NATO Striking Fleet Atlantic (COMSTRIKFLTLANT).

Bush acknowledges Guantanamo damages US image
Yahoo! ^

Posted on 06/14/2006 1:18:38 PM PDT by frogjerk

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush acknowledged on Wednesday that the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where three detainees committed suicide, has damaged the U.S. image abroad and said it should be shut down. But he said a plan for relocating the prisoners was needed first and he also was awaiting a Supreme Court decision about the forum for handling detainee cases.

not news

They need to change their headline. We are not closing Guantanamo. We are considering closing a prison on the naval base.

It has been an enormously successful international progaganda campaign by the left to demonize Gitmo and the USA over the detentions of TERRORISTS who have to be kept somewhere if we’re not allowed to execute the scumbags. Of course, our policy from the start should have been executions of illegal combatants aka terrorists.

What Adm. Mullen and Secy. Gates (who has also made a similar statement) fail to understand is that closing Gitmo will not be the end but merely one step along the way in the propaganda campaigns against America. Unless you are planning to release these 350 or so terrorists (horrible idea), they have to be kept somewhere (since the liberals and RINOs will not allow them to be executed), so it will merely open whole new cans of worms, er, vermin, wherever they are moved next. If you distribute them in domestic military or civilian prisons you just introduce large new avenues for leftist propaganda and agitation. Every site that holds any of these vermin will become subject to the renewed propaganda wars against us. Allow them onto domestic US soil and watch the lawyerly hordes of leftist sycophants go wild trying to “represent” them and agitate on their behalf.

I said at the time, we never should have brought them to Gitmo, I predicted all of this only I thought the agitation and propaganda would be even worse than it has been. We should have kept them in the region, maybe building a prison in some remote part of Afghanistan for a fraction of what Gitmo cost anyway..... or we should have built a prison someplace really remote like Diego Garcia (if we could buy it from the Brits first, not have a Labor Govt. control our policies), or maybe converted a large transport ship into a prison ship and kept it stationed off Diego Garcia or some other obscure place inacessible to leftist lawyers. There still would have been plenty of leftist propaganda, but it would not have attracted nearly the same attention as having the terrorists at a US base in the Carribean.

A good number of terrorists released from Gitmo have returned to terrorism, so we have enabled the deaths of many more civilians and US troops by succumbing to the pressures of leftist morons. How many more have to die unnecessarily to please the politically correct legions of the left?

There was no way that the Senate would have confirmed General Pace for a second time, that was the reality.

oops, that’s 277 terrorist prisoners there now, down from over 350 a year ago and more than 600 at the peak

277 executions would be just fine, but of course the scurrilous left will not allow terrorists to be executed — such vermin must be fed well and coddled in comfort to the end of their days unless released by the pressures of MSM and legal jihad idiots.

They seemed to show up around the time of the Huckster surge. They may be DU, but then it is hard to tell the difference sometimes! LOL Viking kitties need to come out of their deep sleep.

Bottom line, they are full of it, and spend hours creating havoc.

This is January.13, 2007. Frankly, Mullen’s is out of touch with reality. This is a wrongheaded decision of immense proportion with serious long term ramifications.

Shutting down Gitmo could allow legal rights of habeas corpus granted to the terrorists being held. Something we don't want to see happen.

You are wrong. Gitmo is not US soil. Once they are in the US, they will have additional rights under the Constitution.

All US military bases are US soil. The bay is leased from Cuba but the base and prison are US soil.
