Republican Jim Ogonowski, who narrowly lost a congressional race to Niki Tsongas in October, is preparing to challenge U.S. Sen. John Kerry, The Associated Press has learned.
Ogonowski, the brother of an airline pilot killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, said hes been attending Republican events around the state since his 6-point loss to Tsongas, a Democrat.
"Theres nobody in Washington who represents the status quo more than John Kerry," said Ogonowski, who did not officially declare his candidacy.

Aside from his fellow Senator from MA, that is.
Go Ogo!
I’ve never heard of Ogonowski, but anyone who runs against Kerry or Teddy gets a big high five from me.
Gee, I wonder if the Mass Republican Party will support him... I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time the Mass ‘Pubs agree not to support a candidate running against Kennedy or Kerry.
I believe he is also a retired Military officer (Can’t remember which branch). He’ll need a lot of money to beat the “traitor” in Mass. He had better get a Web site up sonn and let people like us know how to contribute. If we could help take Kerry out, that would make me feel good about the election even if we lost everything else.
It would be great to see Kerry (who served in Viet Nam) get trounced.
Kerry didn’t serve in Vietnam. He got a few phony medals, a few photo ops and then deserted his men.
Ogonowski’s brother was one of the pilots killed in 9/11. He lost 49% to 51% to Nicki Tsongas in the election to replace Marty Meehan. Ogonowski’s retired from the Air Force after 28 years service and called on the need for tougher immigration laws during the last campaign.
That’s outstanding if Ogonowski runs against Kerry. He has some good name recognition after coming so close to beating Nikki Tsongas! I’m fervently hoping we won’t still be in MA in November, but if we are, I’ll be thrilled to vote for him!
USAF LtCol (Retired)
There, fixed it. BTW, don't be so gloomy, Holly. Kerry is not well loved in the Bay State and Ogonoski got name recognition and respect out of his previous run.
Losing by less than a point is a narrow loss. Losing by six points is not.
Actually it was 45% to 51%.
*ping*
Now there will be a competitive primary for the Senate, unless Jeff Beatty drops out. And Beatty may just drop out.
Even if Og gets a cleared field, I still don’t see him getting much beyond 30-35% against Kerry.
He may get about 40, which is about all an MA Repub candidate can get.
Ted Kennedy’s opponent last year got 30%. Kerry didn’t even have a GOP opponent in ‘02. A Libertarian got 18%. Well-funded challengers have punctured 40%, but Og isn’t likely to be, so at best, I’d expect him to get in the 30-35% range. If he does respectably or manages to get to that 40%, they might consider him to run for Governor in 2010, but in all honesty, because of the fact that a Republican is stripped of much authority, there really is little reason to run for the office (truly, probably the singlemost worthless Governorship the GOP could hold in the nation) until such time we can drastically increase our numbers in the legislature. Better to try runs for legislature or federal office before the Governorship.
