Thompson and Huckabee sparred earlier this week after Thompson called the Arkansas governor a dirty word: "liberal." Today, speaking to reporters after a campaign event at a breakfast restaurant in North Charleston, Thompson served up another helping.
Asked to respond to Huckabee's charge that Thompson voted for Republican candidates other than conservative icon Ronald Reagan in 1976 and 1980, Thompson scoffed, "That's kind of silly." He explained his support of longtime Tennessee mentor Howard Baker before adding, "If you check the record, Governor Huckabee supported Democrats on a fairly consistent basis during his days in Arkansas politics.
"I don't think he wants to get into that discussion."
Thompson, who has thrown almost all of his campaign's resources into South Carolina in the hopes that a win in the first southern primary could buoy his campaign, says that there's "plenty of time" before next week's contest to convince voters that he's the best conservative candidate.
"We're going to have to make some fundamental decisions as which direction we want to go as a party," he said. "Whether or not we still believe in the Reagan coalition or whether or not we think we ought to go towards a more populist -- and I consider more liberal -- kind of approach."
*UPDATE* From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and Carrie Dann According to news outlets in the governor's home state, Huckabee supported Democrat Barbara Horn during a 2000 primary race for a state senate seat in southwest Arkansas. Horn subsequently beat her Democratic opponent, and the Republican she would have opposed bowed out of the race.

So, you object to securing the border. Hunter supports legal immigration - he just wants to close down the border so that we don’t have illegal immigration. Do you support illegal immigration?
So if we don’t agree with you we’re not astute eh?...:)
There’s a difference...working with Democrats to help pass Conservative interests, and working with Democrats to pass Liberal interests...
It is crystal clear which one Mitten Luther and the GUBERnator were engaged in.
I’m not passing judgement good or bad, just pointing out that Hunter, *uckabee, and Ron Paul are all Buchananites in their own rights.
The point is simply that Hunter will throw his support to fellow Buchananite *uckabee at the convention, and NOT a “CFR candidate” like Thompson or Romney.
Hardly...although it was a nice attempt and above poopie jokes.
Define populism - because if the Republican party gets rid of all populism it will be only the party of old, rich, white men and it will get creamed every election. This party was founded by people who cared about ending the social injustice of slavery and if you kick the social conservatives out of the party then this party will go the way of the Whig party it replaced and fall into dustbin of history.
Well, I’m not sure about the rest of the Fredhead’s but I’ve said from the beginning I would not sell out the troops by helping ensure a Democrat wins...
No dying in vain. No wars for nothing. No cutting and running.
Its certainly possibly, Huckabee and Buchanan care a lot more about social issues like abortion then Thompson seems to. Buchanan and Hunter would have some similar views on trade though Hunter does not support nearly as high of tarriffs as Buchanan would. However, Hunter would strongly disagree with Buchanan’s foreign policy and I doubt he would endorse Huckabee since foreign policy is one of Huckabee’s weaknesses. Hunter would also disagree with Huckabee’s record of fiscal liberalism, but would probably support the platform that Huckabee is running on now.
I will admit that I initially supported Buchanan, however, untill it became clear that he was somewhat anti-semitic and would not support Israel. Other than that I really liked a lot of what he had to say.
I didn’t say anything about kicking social conservatives out of the party...
I SAID KICK HUCKABEE TO THE CURB....to me there’s a difference.
Hopefully I don’t need to popint out to you how well conservatism has served the Republican party.

You used the undefined term populism and I wasn’t sure exactly what you meant by it. People say that Huckabee’s candidacy is fueled by populism and most of his supporters are social conservatives who care more about ending abortion than any “frederalism” concerns that may raise. So, I wondered if it was views like that you meant when you refered to populism.

The only reason I mentioned immigration is that it was one of the ways that you said Hunter fit the Buchanon wing of the party. Your statement kind of confused me because I thought Hunters position on Immigration was orthodoxy but that is why I addressed it. As to trade - there is a difference between the level of tarriff’s that Hunter supports and the level that Buchanon supported but I will grant that there is a large degree of similarity. I see that as a good thing - you obviously see it as a bad thing. I think that a country which doesn’t seek to protect its government and industry is doing failing in its job - you obviously don’t agree.
That's the understatement of the year.
That is a cute graph. Howver, Huck’s positions on social issues show that his faith actually means something to him unlike Carter who actually supported abortion. Also, to my knowledge there have been no allegations that Huck has engaged in adultery unlike Clinton who was a rapist and serial adulteror.
I think you can eliminate the second factor in your equation and it would be more accurate. Huckabee doesn’t disagree with Jimmy Carter on any issues I can think of.
If Huck had any moral standing, he would remain solid on issues instead of flip flopping. He’s a tax and spend liberal that supports illegals over Americans.
