Huckabee Defends Joke About Fred
cbsnews ^ | 01/12/08 | Joy Lin

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Asked about Fred Thompson’s “hatchet” attack against him at Thursday's Republican debate, Mike Huckabee joked to Joe Scarborough that he thought “Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.”

On the bus with reporters on Route 96 in Michigan from Lansing to Grand Rapids, Huckabee explained his Metamucil comment saying, “You have to understand the context of the show….It’s not quite as irreverent as Imus…not quite Stephen Colbert but it’s serious topics with an edge.”

“I really do believe if people can’t have some sense of humor as they approach this stuff, then it causes everybody to be so locked down and consultant driven that their campaigns become so boring because all they’re going to do is give this robotic answer to everything that’s very carefully scripted. I promise you, you won’t have moments like this,” Huckabee said, gesturing to the handful of reporters that had gathered around him for an on-the-record conversation that would last about 40 minutes.

“Does Romney do these?” Huckabee asked the reporters. No, replied one. Neither does Thompson, said another.

“If I thought I couldn’t be a human being. That I gotta wait till six handlers tell me what I can and can’t say and I have to read it, you know, it’s not worth it.”

He is not using the pat tense in the statement. God bless you and your candidate.

No one ever accused President Reagan of lacking class.

Please, I remember the election of 1980 and the democrats and the MSM attacked Ronald Reagan as being a classless Hollywood B actor.

Oh please. They did make fun of him as being a Hollywood actor, but they never labeled him classless.

Classless was Billy Carter’s moniker back then.

Nothing is ever his fault....I wont accept that out of six year old, why would I tolerate it in a President?

Is Huckabee like some preschooler who is fixated on bodily functions?

That was not the comparison I am talking about. The competition said that about Reagan in an effort to win themselves. It was not true. We are pointing out that Huckabee is indeed a buffoon, and a rube rip for the picking by the left, who are just pleased beyond compare at his success and your stupidity in enabling such.

Comparison of Reagan and Huck are foolish. Reagan was a Conservative and never would have been stupid enough to be used by the socialist like Huckabee is. The only thing that scares me more is Huck may be at least some what complacent in his politics.

You need to get up to speed on modern history, in particular the current Christian Democratic Movement. Or perhaps you already are, and using tax money to save the world is your thing...

The Huckster has proved to be very snide lately—not exactly an admirable quality for someone who purports to be “a witness for Christ.”

And dishonesty is not exactly an admirable quality for someone who purports to be a Christian.

I'd like to know if Preacher Huckabee crosses his fingers behind his back when he lies about his record.

It doesn’t it occur to Preacher Huckabee that making juvenile comments on an “irreverent” show is unbecoming of any candidate seeking the office of POTUS. Apparently the more important thing is “having fun.” But really, what it comes down to is that Huckabee knows Fred mopped the floor with him in the last debate.

Again with Huckabee: no class, no genuine respect for the office he seeks.

“That would be very unwise of McCain. IF McCain is fortunate enough to get the nomination he really needs to have Duncan Hunter as his running mate.”

IF McCain wins the nomination, which is the direction it is headed at THIS time (things can change). He isn’t going to pick Hunter. Duncan Hunter does bring anything to him voter wise. The reason he MAY go with Huckabee is because he will bring many voters with him. It would soften McCain in the eyes of values voters (Huckabee primary constituency) to have Mike as his VP.

When asked about his fellow GOP candidates, Huckabee said he though Hunter would make an excellent SecDef. That is probably the best utilization for Rep. Hunter.

I have seen a great many post things like McCain/Thompson or Thompson/McCain. I don’t see that ever happening. The men are good friends, but they are both Alpha Males. I cannot envision either of them subordinating themselves to another. Of all the GOP field (and I don’t include Paul because he is pure Libertarian not GOP), only Huckabee is the type by personality to be a VP.

Of course, McCain might not want Huckabee, but I can see the logic of the choice in regards to shoring up the base.

Guess he likes that bodily function retort. He used a similar one in Arkansas. From a November Salon article by an Arkansas journalist:

Even editorialists and columnists at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the state’s dominant (and Republican-friendly) daily paper, use words like “petty” and “thin-skinned” to describe Huckabee. Then again, he’s compared hard-hitting (and accurate) news reporters for the Democrat-Gazette to the press fabulists Jayson Blair and Janet Cooke. He called liberal columnist John Brummett of Stephens Media “constipated” when that early admirer commenced some gentle criticism. His administration paid $15,000 to settle a suit filed by Roby Brock, the host of a public TV news show whom Huckabee’s people tried to force off the air for his critical commentary.

Then there’s me. I’m the editor of an alternative weekly, but I began covering Huckabee when I was a columnist for the now-defunct daily Arkansas Gazette in 1991, and Mike and I have been on the outs pretty much ever since. He once called me and the Memphis Commercial Appeal bureau chief “junkyard journalists” for our reporting. He also compared me, in print, to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and, I’ve been told on good authority, has wished aloud for my early and violent demise.

“GOP will lose. Can you see it?”

The GOP will probably lose no matter who gets the nomination. Each candidate or combination creates problems.

The real nightmare scenario for the GOP would be a Clinton/Obama ticket. This would energize the Dems big time, and keep any factions of their group (like the black vote) from defecting or staying home.

IMO the ideal GOP ticket would be Thompson/Huckabee. However, I don’t see that ever happening. First of all, I think Thompson is not going to do well in S.C. (Of course, I could be VERY wrong about this). Also, I think Thompson actually despises Huckabee like many here on FR do also.

Thus you agree that to be Christian one must only believe in Christ as the devil does. Guess you also agree that Muslims that believe in Christ (and they do) are Christian. President Bush a few weeks back that Christians and Muslims believe in the same God.

People also clapped for Barabbas
