MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Asked about Fred Thompsons hatchet attack against him at Thursday's Republican debate, Mike Huckabee joked to Joe Scarborough that he thought Fred needs some Metamucil. I think it would help a lot if he gets some. You know, he was in a bad mood last night.
On the bus with reporters on Route 96 in Michigan from Lansing to Grand Rapids, Huckabee explained his Metamucil comment saying, You have to understand the context of the show .Its not quite as irreverent as Imus not quite Stephen Colbert but its serious topics with an edge.
I really do believe if people cant have some sense of humor as they approach this stuff, then it causes everybody to be so locked down and consultant driven that their campaigns become so boring because all theyre going to do is give this robotic answer to everything thats very carefully scripted. I promise you, you wont have moments like this, Huckabee said, gesturing to the handful of reporters that had gathered around him for an on-the-record conversation that would last about 40 minutes.
Does Romney do these? Huckabee asked the reporters. No, replied one. Neither does Thompson, said another.
If I thought I couldnt be a human being. That I gotta wait till six handlers tell me what I can and cant say and I have to read it, you know, its not worth it.
Ummm, I know exactly what Mr. Dobson said, and he told no lies. Fred ain't darkened the door of a church in a while, it is his "fruit"... Judging via one's fruits is very Christian...
Judging from FT fruits one could not tell if he was Christian or not. Deal with it, and don't send some office fellow to do it for you like Fred did. Fred obviously has Christian leanings, as one can easily tell listening to his references in his speaches, but one also can tell he is unconfortable with the issue. OTOH, Duncan Hunter had no problems talking about his faith... you can search Youtube to view the videos. One thing I have noticed about popcorn Christians is that the one issue that will bring them them to reality fast is when Christianity is attacked or shunned as something to be ashamed of. When Fred says he doesn't want to wear his faith on his sleeve, that is all fine and good, but it sends a message to voters that he is ashamed of fellow Christians.
When Jim Dobson said he didn't think Fred was a Christian, all Fred had to do was say "well yeah, I am a Christian and proud of it, but I have been a little lax about church attendance sorry, but it is just the way I am"... Instead Fred sends out a spokesman who has to dig in the way back machine for a responce. Doctor Dobson breached the subject that is number one for Christian voters, and Fred didn't even swing at the question. Fred couldn't have hit a homerun, but he could of at least got a chance to get on base by swinging. His batting average on Christian voter issues was good enough to swing, but instead Fred hoped for a walk on the issue.
Jim Robinson put up a list of issues he considered as very important this election. He didn't list "Christian" whatsoever on his list, but a lot of voters have that number one on their list, including myself. Do I think Fred Thompson is not a Christian, nope, but I do think he is little chicken not to put it out there to be knocked like the majority of us do.
IT is his "fruit?" That's it? That one thing is the basis of your judgment of him? That's sad.
P.S., regarding "Fred ain't darkened the door of a church in a while," let me ask you: when was the last time Fred went to church?
You don't know, yet you implied it's been a while. For all you know, it was yesterday.
It sends a message that he will say his prayers in private, rather than as part of an ostentatious Pharsaical public show.
Bill Clinton carried a ginormous (read: highly visible) bible in and out of church.
In the context that I used it, the popcorn Christians are folks that are good Christian folks normally, but have dedicated little to no time on research on candidates past word of mouth information. They likely don't know Huck's record versus Fred's. Odds are they have never heard of half of the candidate that are running, and if they have, they couldn't tell you one thing about them.
The term is one I self made and is basically derived from watching football fans watching bands play at halftime. To me the best part of the game is the band's performance at halftime, but to the popcorn eaters, it is just time to go get a coke and pee. The may occasionally clap to be polite, but one can tell there is little attention to detail. Vice versa could be said for some people during the football game itself of course. I have widened the meaning to include all people that really don't have a caring interest in something that requires judgment. Voting should be an serious issue, perhaps us FReepers take that to an extreme, but popcorn voters tend to bug me enough that I made my own lexicon for it.
Ditto!
I want a President, not a comedian.
Umm, there were web sites that offered money for any picture of Fred near a church. He admitted himself he had not gone in a while. Obviously you didn't follow this issue. I did.
Asinine.
He admitted himself he had not gone in a while.
When was this admission? How do you know he hasn't gone since?
Obviously you didn't follow this issue.
Bzzzt. Wrong.
It's easy to identify Poop Joke Mikey as a socialist laboring under a stark ignorance of foreign affairs.
“You and your fellow Huckabee Fans are backing a man who will bring socialism to us all.
The Christian Democrats in Europe came in the same disguise and fooled the same types of people, people like you, with the talk of God, Jesus and Social Justice through government action.
None of this is Godly, Christian or American.”
.
You are absolutely spot on in your assessment.
I’ve been looking into Christian Democrats for a bit.
They...meaning Huck, Rollins, and their minions...scare me to death.
Fred was dead on right when he compared and contrasted Reagan conservatism and Hucks fellow travelers who are in mind and spirit Christian Democrats.
Or, maybe those following Huck don’t understand what he’s all about?
I hope that’s the case, as I would hate to think anyone supports this man simply because he is a Christian.
I find it hard to believe that any conservative would support him if they had researched his governance in AK, though.
There is a struggle between the religious right and the religious left for the soul of the Republican party.
I’m afraid should Huck be on the ticket at all, and have his favorite issues implemented, he will effectively destroy it, and conservatives along with it.
I know I won’t change any of the Hucksters’ supporters minds, but I hope they will research Christian Democrats before they vote for him.
BTW, to any interested, I am a Southern Baptist.
We are going to have to pool our resources, this is a whole new ball game, and now we are on the same side it seems. It will take a combined effort of Mitt and Fred to stop this thing. I think the two of them are ahead of us already...
“We call it nanny state here, a simple and cute term that portends a disastrous path for a Federal Republic and a Capitalist economic system.
Look at the fall of Europe as an economic power, and here we are at a vulnerable time.”
.
Bumping for emphasis...
What's amazing is that Mike Huckabee was one of the few elected politicians to publicly support FR and this is the "thanks" he gets.
JMO, this Huckabee hatred just shows to me, IMO, that the far right is just as fickle and reactionary as the far left.
Probably be a long, long time, and also Fred should be wary, for the long knives of FReepers have been shown.
Seems in Arkansas Huckabee called those conservatives who opposed him “Shiite Republicans” while also campaigning for a few democrats along the way.

Bill probable could capitalize "Bible" too. Do you think going to church is just a public show for most Christians? Should all Christians stay home to avoid a scene? Good grief..."Feed the Church of God which He has purchased with His own blood."
Anyhoo, my post is saying that Fred could of handled the situation far far better than he did. Spin it how ever you want with whatever angle you can, Fred didn't do so well doing it.
Dr. Dobson should have handled it better.
For instance, he should have given Fred the courtesy of asking him where he stands in his faith.
But, he didn’t.
He just proclaimed Fred not to be a Christian without even speaking to him.
I lost a lot of respect for Dr. Dobson over his handling of this.
How you doing?
I read somewhere that Fred was brought up in a church of Christ, my church growing up. Not the liberal United Churches of Christ’ (Obama’s?); I’m talking about the fundamentalist, autonomous ones. They are conservative—practically `plain-clothes’ Amish, but with electrical appliances: no women preaching, no instruments/a capella singing, novels discouraged, cards, dancing—bad, bad, and there’s a lot of `fire and brimstone’ but no snake handling or speaking in tongues. (Think of `Chick’ publications.)
We sent my daughter to one of their summer youth retreats a while back and she came back scared to death from having it pounded into her that she was `hell-bound’, so I didn’t send her back. Maybe Fred considers himself a christian, while not particularly `religious’, as I do.
In any event if I want someone to unload on me, to tell me to `straighten-up & fly right’, my wife is available, 24-7.
Give `em hell Fred.
You can go to church 3 times a day and not be a Christian. Christians believe in Christ.
It's call passive/aggressive.
That is very true.
